Re: Rain Rain Go Away

Frustrating as it may be the above, ie keeping off the plot is sound advice. Longer term raised beds might be a so,ution, and to grow vegs which like moister soil in the worst affected areas. If you,re on an allotment, this really ought to be a matter for committee discussion as bringing in other he...

Re: Religion vs practicality

Just go ahead and book it. Don't fret about their religious views. View it as a business transaction only as they probably need the money like any other organisation to help pay for their council tax and overheads. But obviously check if there are any hiring restrictions first like No Alcohol as tha...

Re: Early Winter Bits and Bobs.

I have just been gifted my second red poinsettia plant this Christmas season and wonder how long it will survive. Has anybody ever kept one for a second year and succeeded in reproducing red flowers again? Afraid I,ve never succeeded. I reckon the must be the most frequently thrown away plant ever g...

Re: What's everyone having for Christmas?

Family gathering this weekend so just the two of us on Christmas Day. We don't like Turkey much and even a chicken is too much. We got fed up with wasting as we usually have something different on Boxing Day so Mr Primrose now roasts just two chicken breasts wrapped in bacon with pigs in blankets. &...

Re: Early Winter Bits and Bobs.

Think it might just be easier to buy.a furry cat bed for the cat and stick a small covered hot water bottl in it on cold days! They always have a knack of finding the warmest spots! Ours discovered a hot water pipe for the radiator system which ran under the middle of the landing carpet and would of...

Re: Leeks

Yes both the above are sadly right and once it gets a hold the problem inevitably sadly seems to haunt future leek crops. If you have an allotment and grow some at the opposite end of yiur plot it might be worth a try but general advice is to avoid growing them for two or three years, whixh is a rea...

Re: Autumn Bits and Bobs.

Barney. It will be a shame if you miss your broad bean planting. The ground here is frost solid. Do you have a greenhouse where you could start them off in cells?

Judging by the white layer on the ground this morning no doubt OH will be starting off a new early winter thread!

Re: Autumn Bits and Bobs.

I think the dark winter days are hated by everybody. I suppose one can understand why northern countries like Finland which have such short daylight hours can have high alcohol consumption . There's probably little else to do to cheer yourself up !

Re: Autumn Bits and Bobs.

Nothing to do with current flooding but still slightly seasonal. Our village church clock has developed festive fever in the past few days and decided to strike 36 times on every hour. It's been driving nearby neighbours nuts specially during the dark night hours. THey,ve now switched off the chimes...

Re: Autumn Bits and Bobs.

You seem to have planned as best you can given the site restrictions under which you,re working. It's just a pity that all this surplus winter water can't be stored on site somehow against summer rainfall shortage. Is there any way an old galvanised tank or similar could be acquired from somewhere t...

Re: Autumn Bits and Bobs.

Feel for your son Geoff. We have a nephew who,s a GP who,s in the same situation. Combined with trying to trying to cope with a young child and a long job commute the pressures get overwhelming. I suppose the public don't always help either with the way some of them deliberately abuse their health b...

Re: Autumn Bits and Bobs.

Thanks Geoff , althiugh I rather suspect our friend & immediate neighbours might possibly have a very informal arrangement with a nearby farmer who empties the tanks on nearby field and uses it as free fertiliser., Old country ways and all thwt ! , I think it,s very sensible to get these things ...
