Great minds and all that. I'm thinking of getting one of these too. When my inlaws lived in the Okanagan Valley in Canada, they found it to be a really useful piece of kit for their abundance of fruit.

More tips - If you're trying to cut back on your salt intake, most bread (whether made in a machine or by hand) will rise with little or no salt. Try replacing the sugar with honey, but use less. Also - if you find wholemeal bread too dense, replace a third of the wholemeal flour with a good quality...

The slug problem could be sorted by putting gravel down. No help with the ants though!

I've got several of these, some on soil and others on concrete and there's no difference in the results,but it's much easier to turn the contents of the bins on concrete.

Try Lidl or Aldi for seeds at about 50p per packet - you don't have to worry about keeping seed.

You don't have to dig them in. Just grow them as stand alone bags. They're excellent.

What's it like? If it's soft and fibrous, just use it as you would a general fertiliser. If not, mix it with leaf mould, mole hill soil, anything you've got to break it down. Then top dress with it.

I'm a deep bed fan. Haven't double digged a plot for more than 20 years. Neither have I stood on any of them. I turn over the top of each section in the autumn, cover with home grown compost, leave to the frost and worms, then plant in the spring.

OOh - is it me? I grow all the main soft herbs throughout the winter in the unheated area of my tunnel, plus cuttings from the woody types. Lettuces, rocket and mizuna also grow in the same tunnel. About to start others, if you want the detail. Will start to heat the other tunnel in January, so more...
