Re: Multi-purpose compost???

Homebase compost is junk. I gave it up years ago for the above reasons mentioned by others. B&Q MPC - in large bags has been great for me - so far.

Lots of young here: more than normal.

I reckon the late spring means more insects for the young...

Re: Fewer slugs?

Far fewer slugs and snails. I blame the drier weather as we have a marshy field next door: they must be zillions there..

Re: Rich Londoners with second homes rule the rooster! OK?

Primrose's comments on foxes made me laugh. The only more disturbing noise at night - from nature that is- is the sound of owls courting. We have an oak tree next to our bedroom window and it appears to be a favourite trysting place for lovesick owls..

Re: Rich Londoners with second homes rule the rooster! OK?

I like to complain about the peasants which crow early in the morning. They are wild and intractable..

Sorry I mean pheasants...

Treatment of course for both is the same: let them eat cake or lead...:-)

Re: Rich Londoners with second homes rule the rooster! OK?

We have the best of both worlds. Live right on the edge of a small town- all supermarkets of every type within 8 miles... fields on the back, a National Trust Garden across the fields and the Peak National Park within 15 miles drive.. Who wants to live in the country when it's full of peasants or fa...

Re: Happy side effect of the bad winter

Our outdoor strawberries have just started to flower. Lots of gooseberries, and white/red/black current fruit set.

Damson prolific ditto apples , and pears. Unless they are frosted or we have a dreadful summer, looks like a bumper year (crosses fingers)
