Yes, I think I would have knocked, with a bit of fleece too. They may feel a bit miffed at first but would most likely come to appreciate your effort.

I am going to try this. I do have a productive heap at the bottom of the garden but there are two tubs right by the back door, containing a blackcurrant bush and a Daphne. Our local garden centre has a huge bin where you can take your pots. And help yourself to any of the containers that have been put in as well. I've gained at least 4 nice big planters whilst donating my little pots too.

Just fitted an extra water butt - just in case we have another heatwave. Trying to plan ahead and cut down on the number of pots to water. It's not working, btw - due to lack of self control whilst visiting the garden centre.
