I've not yet received my February issue, something to look forward to today I hope. I'm very pleased there's something in there; this is too valuable a resource to ignore.

Forum in the magazine

Am I just missing it, or is there really no mention of the forum in the actual KG magazine? I only found the forum by accident when I was looking at the website to find out about subscribing sometime last year. Surely promoting the forum, even using extracts from the forum in the mag would encourage...

I'd be loathe to put cement down anywhere in preference to soil. You can get some really good ant boxes from Wilkos. You put them down, the poison is inside and the ants go in then carry it out with them into the nest. It's worked brilliantly for me at home and at work and they're very cheap (£1.99 ...

Hi Johnboy Thanks for your reply. I wasn't the one who identified this weed, it was our Chairman (who sadly died a couple of weeks ago so I can't find out how he identified it). I'm the Secretary and was asked to find a picture of the thing and put up a notice warning people about it, which I did. T...

Thanks Kevin I too had a look on Google some months ago but found little further information (you are right about the common name, I remembered after I'd left the post, I've changed it). The guys who've been invaded seem to be getting nowhere with eradication; I'm wondering how I can prevent it gett...

Galinsoga Parviflora

Our site has been invaded with Galinsoga Parviflora (Gallant Soldier I think is the common name). It's confined to 3 plots but is truly awful. It grows from seed and rhizomes and can cover a plot in weeks. The plotholders pull it out by the sackload and have been advised to black bag and bin it as i...

Preserves - recipes

I'm planning on making lots of preserves in 2006; I'm also planning on giving them as Christmas presents to all my friends and relatives (they've been polled and all think it's a great idea). What I'm after now is really good recipes. I will have at my disposal Raspberries Strawberries Blueberries R...

Thank you Sue and Kevin, I shall have a go with both recipes. I did have everything in the pan together Kevin but when I filled the jars the vinegar mix went to the bottom of the jar leaving half the veg uncovered. It was a Vogue recipe (from my sister's cook book, it's not my usual reading material...

Piccalilli - help

Does anyone have a really good recipe for piccalilli? I've just made a batch but had no end of problems as the specified amount of vegetables far exceeded the amount of vinegar and spices. I therefore had to go back and make another whole batch of vinegar and spices to cover the veg in the jars. I p...

I only have three chickens and they ALL sit together on the floor. Can't be pecking order with my bunch. I'll just accept that they're not very bright.

Hi Sue-the-recycler My henhouse is a garden shed which stands on bricks so they do go up a ramp, although to be fair they could hop in without one. Because they happily perch 3ft off the ground when they're outside I'm not sure your theory would work, but who knows, chickens are not the brightest bi...

Thanks, I'm glad I'm not alone, I thought maybe I had retarded chickens. My last chicks were a pair of Red Jungle Fowl who one day decided not to go to bed in their shed and spent the next three years living loose in my garden, with the nights spent 40 feet up a fir tree. Following a serious fox ass...
