Re: Late Winter Bits and Bobs.
I’ve also cleaned up and sharpened my secateurs - I found a good YouTube video which I followed - what a difference!

Re: Late Winter Bits and Bobs.
I’ve also been cutting down my autumn raspberries, and then moving them to a new position. The extra ones that always appear I’ve dug out and I’m actually cutting up the roots bit by bit and adding them to the compost heap and Hotbin. I’ve still got my tall brassica cage to finish erecting and my ca...

Re: Preserve your produce
Thanks for the tip about getting replacement lids from The Jam Jar shop Geoff - I’ll check that out.

Re: Preserve your produce
I received the book by Pam the Jam called The Book of Preserves for Christmas, so I’m busy making lists of some things I need to start. Things like a jam thermometer, jam funnel, micro plane zester (I’d never heard of one of those I must admit!). So, going to have a go at making some jam this year w...

Re: Root trainers
I’ve used them for a few years now, mainly for broad beans, peas, runners and French beans. I’ve found them really good, they definitely help to develop a good deep root system before planting out. It can be a bit of a delicate process I find though extracting the plants from the modules when planti...

Re: Death list
We found a long lost relative (of my ex husband’s) whom we hadn’t heard from for years, (but used to exchange letters with every Christmas) and who we assumed had passed away, in a care home in the area where she lived.

Re: What are you going to use when peat is gone ?
I use Fertile Fibre most years, which I find good. I grow some of my tomatoes and cucumbers in it in big pots in the greenhouse and I put a layer of my own compost on top which feeds them all season, and I get a good crop. I also use New Horizon MP (which is peat free)which, although it doesn’t alwa...

Re: Sticky bands for apple trees!
Not with this particular sort Westi, no, but maybe I’ve had that sort that before and that’s why I’ve got confused about having the sticky side on the outside 🤔. I think there must be different sorts then. And as you say, it’s not foolproof anyway as some must be able to get past because of the gnar...

Sticky bands for apple trees!
Right, I feel a right twit. I’ve been putting sticky bands round the trunks of my apple trees (and their stakes) for years to create a sticky barrier to prevent those little climbing insects from making their way into the tree canopy and wreaking their havoc the following year. I’ve only been puttin...

Re: Autumn Bits and Bobs.
Last night it went down to just under 3C here, and the sun is shining and there’s a beautiful blue sky! I might get my tall brassica cage finished today🤞 I picked the last cucumbers from the greenhouse yesterday, and I’m hoping some of the tomatoes might continue to ripen before I have to bring the ...

That sounds like a good idea oldherbaceous - thank you!
Yes I think I understand what you mean and I’d sort of wondered about something like that myself, so now you’ve suggested it I’ll keep that in mind.

Re: New walk-in brassica cage & measuring!
Of course, the other issue will be when I want to move it so I’m not growing the brassicas in the same place all the time. The guy I spoke to where I bought it from said they’d never been asked about how easy or difficult it would be to move before!

Re: New walk-in brassica cage & measuring!
Oh my gosh Westi - how frustrating that must have been when those little screws didn’t hold up! I haven’t been able to finish putting mine up yet as I had my regular chiropractic treatment 2 days ago and so had to take it easy for a couple of days. And today it’s raining so it won’t be today either!...
