Re: Late Spring Bits and Bobs.

Yes OH. You batted it down here very nicely . The combination of cold wind and rain is very unpleasant. Almost feel, like writing the rest of the day off and retiring under the duvet with my hot water bottle! Feel sorry for all these newly hatched young birds in open nests.

Re: Late Spring Bits and Bobs.

We could do with some of your rain robo. I,m sure the farmers could too. Having a bitter cold wind forced on us to ruin the day for any outside sociable activities we might as well have the whole hog ! We,ve had to out some heavy.weights on our lightweight garden table to stop it being blown off the...

Can somebody help me with sorrel please?

I have some very healthy sorrel growing in our garden. I use the young tender leaves in salads but my only attempts at cooking it - (simmering it lightly in barely boiling water ) ended up as a brown sludgy stomach heaving disaster so I obviously did something wrong! Any hints please on how best to ...

Re: Early Spring Bits and Bobs

Well, something has gone wrong with the weather forecast. It,s a Bank Holiday Monday and it,s not raining YET but wind is too miserabky cold cold to venture out . Because I leave small windows open a little to keep the house ventilated the doors are rattling horribly. Looks like it will be a while b...

Re: Early Spring Bits and Bobs

Everything is so late this year, isn,t it. We,ve sown very little in the ground, just half a row of Swiss chard, carrots & beetroot but nothing is peeping through. I,m wondering whether the seeds have all been killed by the constant frost and whether to resow in the same locations but that risks...

No cuckoo again this spring, and for the first time no frogspawn either.

Re: Early Spring Bits and Bobs

Oh dear Geoff. I predict it,a going to be the sort of year where we,re getting early blight warnings in May before the outdoor tomatoes are even planted out! I have two early "guinea pig" climbing bean seedlings on my bay window sill whose tips will soon be touching the bay window roof but...

Re: Rain gauge

Thanks Geoff. Will ferret around in the drawers of gloom in kitchen and garage to see if we can find a tube of the stuff and give it a try

Re: Rain gauge

Does that stand d up to frost temperatures? We suspect this is what probably sealed its fate although it was probably getting a little elderly.

Rain gauge

Annoyingly the plastic contrainer which formed ourV shaped rain gauge on a 2 foot spike split yesterday and all the water leaked iut so I don,t know how much precious rain we actually had. Have looked on Amazon's but that model no longer seems to be available. I fortunate container & spike are m...

Re: Anyone heard it yet?

Lucky you! A lovely experience to have on your doorstep. If you left your kitchen door open he'd probably come in and help himself!

Re: Anyone heard it yet?

How thrilling Retropants. I suspect that as the ever growing urgent need to feed hungry babies increases, the sight of an open hand containing mealworms or si flower seeds will grow too overpowering to resist. If you can manage to make his/her first experience as stressfree as possible you may find ...

Re: Anyone heard it yet?

I always feel rather wistful when I read cuckoo threads because iur local one which came every year disappeared several years ago and has never been replaced.
Do the same birds return same location every year? If so I assume that once they die, there is unlikely to be a new tenant in the area.

Re: Early Spring Bits and Bobs

We desperately need some gentle steady rain Here . Recently had virtually all our garden fencing and posts replaced so all adjoining borders had to be dug up and earth disturbed. Soil very dry down to a considerable depth so I fear new plants and seeds will start off with a moisture deficit this spr...

Re: Early Spring Bits and Bobs

Everybody is talking about "the lost year" we've all suffered as a result of Coronavirus and in many ways of course that is true but actually on a gardening and growing front activities have very much continued as normal haven,t they? Crops have still been sown, cultivated and harvested, s...
