The characteristic I have found most irritating is a tendency the fall over sideways. Try putting a small amount in one and checking how easy it is to push over. You can also put clear plastic bags over plant pots to form mini greenhouses, then remove when the seedling is aboput an inch long.

Glad to be able to help, the reason i went for the three colour pack was beacuse the birds pick alot of my red flowered beans last summer so i will be doing an experiment to see which ones they leave alone :D

Use an exterior varnish, if it is rough wood you will have to use several coats but you can get the shine you want.
