Re: Autumn Bits and Bobs.

Stravaig, No earthquakes here. Expected snowstorm and closing the border to Russia is all the excitement we have here at the moment. I'm good. I've been here too long, but it's all the kids know, so moving back to Scotland won't happen soon. I've carved a neep. Never again, it's like iron. I'm Ameri...

Re: Autumn Bits and Bobs.

Pumpkins seemed to have been ok. The soup wasn't great, but that was more because the half-frozen apples I put in were too sour. The pumpkin quick bread I made was devoured by the teachers at my school, so must have been ok. They held their texture after defrosting. They weren't Halloween pumpkins t...

Re: Frozen Pumpkins

Thanks Primrose. It is an experiment. I brought one in and cut it in half. Pretty much frozen through, but you can see the frost damage. I usually puree them for quick breads so I think they'll be ok for that, but not sure about stews. Scooping out the seeds was like some strange sorbet.

Re: Autumn Bits and Bobs.

Hello again from Finland. Nice to see there are still a few familiar faces here. OH :) Getting on here. First proper snow of the season so my allotment work is basically done. I did manage to build a big raised bed, but didn't get the winter digging done. There's always something. I need to try and ...

Frozen Pumpkins

Hi to anyone who remembers me. Still in Finland, still have an allotment.

I harvested my pumpkins and put them to cure and then forgot about them. They're now frozen, but undamaged. Can I thaw them and use them or are they goners?

Re: Springtime bits and bobs

Evening all, you're all making me jealous. Thought spring was on it's way, but we got another 4 inches of snow yesterday, so guess I need to wait a bit longer. We are getting above 0C now midday, but it's still as low as -10C at night. Looks like we're staying for another year, so need to find out w...

Re: Recommendations for short season crops

Thanks all. We found out we are staying, so can start planning. Need to find where I can get some seed here and figure out someplace to maybe grow inside, but light is so poor just now. Can't use the fences, nature's babe, they have this horrible climber all over them that smothers everything. Like ...

Recommendations for short season crops

Still waiting to see if we're staying in Finland for another year, but if so, I want to get planning for this summer. We still have 3 feet of snow, but it will melt eventually. Any suggestions for crops I can grow quick and in pots or a small space. I need to ask our landlord if I can dig in his bac...

Re: Are you all snowed in ?

Well remembered. Let no one say you've lost your spark, Herb, sharp as a tack, you are. :D

Nugget - Aidan's 4 now
Peanut - Finn is 2.5 years
Niblet - Calla's 6 months

I have no idea where the time has gone.

Re: Are you all snowed in ?

Hello, we're all well. Missing the UK and my allotment. Going to be here for a bit longer than first planned, so looks like I might be on looking for advice for crops I can grow in pots during short hot summers.

Re: Just for fun - some home grown garden haiku

Lovely. Here's one, not a haiku Turned Page if I start with soil and the random pull of the sun the hours lost would have a root a truth the glisten of rain solemnity potential in my weight behind the spade’s edge promise in the lilt of a cabbage white in the dark corners of the compost heap ...

Re: Are you all snowed in ?

Hello all, a subject close to my doorstep. 7 months in Finland and yes, we have some snow, about 3 feet of it. We're not snowed in of course, the Finns don't really get snowed in. The temp is steadily around -10 sometimes going down to -18. We're just gettin on with it. I take the kids to daycare or...

Re: Bits and bobs No16 Spring.

Just wanted to pop on and say hello and probably goodbye for a while to all those who remember me. I feel quite jealous wandering over these threads and seeing all your lovely plots as I have had to give mine up this summer. After a stressful year or two of very little work, my partner has finally f...
