Part of the area we are planning to dig over for veg is directly under an established sycamore tree. Is there anything at all veg wise which we could grow?

Yes it was Allan....do you know where we can get a manual? Hubby is an engineer and loves to tinker with anything mechanical, so this is an ideal project. He bought it for £20!
