All sorted.
In the end I had to loosen the motor mounting bolts and move the entire part away sufficiently until I could just slip the new belt over the end of the shaft.

Thanks fir that - I'll give it a go as soon as the replacement belt arrives. It was due yesterday, but I think Royal Mail have staff shortages, so I'm being patient.
I do appreciate your input - this is on the edge of my DIY experience!
