Re: Early Spring Bits and Bobs.

I’ve recently found a book in a charity shop , by Bob Flowerdew , The No Work Garden (!). It’s a bit of an inspiration and it has come at the very right time for me as l have been a bit at odds with spending so much time watering ( mostly containers ) , weeding and pricking out , among other things ...

Re: Tomatoes

If you put a thin layer of sharp sand on top of the compost , after sowing , it will help the seed coat be pulled off the seed leaves as the
seedling emerges.

Re: Best uses for comfrey

Thank you !
Compost heap it will be , and I’ll try and make more liquid for feeding.
On that subject , as Geoff mentions , l too feel that it is an imprecise and variable brew , even though l get good results with it.
What other feed , liquid or other wise do you guys and gals use on your plots ?

Best uses for comfrey

I’m just pondering on the best use of the comfrey on my plot. Having grown a nice sized patch , this year l have mulched with it , activated compost with it , used it as a liquid feed and added to the leaf mould heap, but never had enough comfrey to do any of these properly. ( l can’t really increase...

Re: Effort and reward

Talking about evenings disappearing , a slight change of tack ; l can’t get used to the sun setting at 4 .20pm !. I know it’s November but as it’s generally been so mild for the time of year it’s been a shock not to be able to visit the plot after dinner . Having said that l am in deepest Somerset ,...

Re: No dig potatoes

Hi Stephen , Ahh , yes , the answer lies in the soil !!. My allotment is on thick clay and l am trying to avoid breaking my back digging it . My fellow plot holders rotavate each season and struggle to keep crops hydrated. I am mulching as much as l can and find that by not digging , the crops are f...
