Re: Private habits of mallards in breeding season

We made a pond a couple of years ago and a pair of mallards were here for several months last year. They're here again this year.Sometimes they are here for most of the day, although they haven't been here today. They usually lie beside the pond or go in the pond but sometimes they go on the grass righ...

Re: Ducks

Thanks for your replies Old Herbaceous and Primrose. That would be a shame if they ate our frogspawn and tadpoles,we haven't got any yet, were going to get some from a friend. They are lovely to look at though and we're hoping they'll bring their babies.I have no idea wheere they are nesting, probably n...

Ducks

Last year we built a wildlife pond in our garden. We got some tadpoles from a friend and watched them hatch, had the usual beetles etc and it has been fantastic watching various birds having a bath. This week a pair of mallards, male and female have been coming backwards and forwards to the pond and the...

I usually run over them with the lawn mower, maybe that's why they're spreading!I'll try picking them and see what happens.I'll have to check if they're edible,I have a book on fungi but I'll probably just get rid of them to be on the safe side.

Toadstools on lawn

Last year we cut down a huge conifer and have some toadstools around where the roots are.Yesterday I found more toadstools,a different kind on another part of the lawn. What is the best way to get rid of toadstools?

We have loads of birds in the garden and I feed them all kinds of things. They love rice, pasta, mash, bits of meat, cheese apples, bananas, pears, bread, dried fruit etc as well as bird seed.We aren't bothered with rodents at all as the birds seem to eat the food as soon as it goes out.

scardy cat plants

We get bothered a lot by cats eating our wild birds .I'd like to grow some of the scardy cat plants, coleus canina but can only find them in plant form.Does anyone know where I can get seeds from?

Johnboy and Kevin,

Thanks for your replies.I agree,it would have to be done in secret! It just seems such a waste to have it there and not use it.It's too small for the council to do anything with.

how to claim unused land

Don't know if anyone knows anything about this subject. We have a bit of council land at the bottom of our garden, about 7ft by 30ft approx. We've lived here for 12 years and the only tme the council have ever done anything to maintain it was not long after we moved in.I complained because the weeds we...

Fedges

Has anyone got a fedge,a willow hedge in their garden? What do you think of them and would you recommend them?I'm looking to block off the bottom part of our garden to make a wildlife garden and thought this might be a fairly cheap way to do it as fencing panels etc would be expensive and hedging pla...

Cats

I don't know if there's any real answer to this but basically neighbours cats are eating the birds in our garden.I know this is what they do but I don't like it going on right under my nose.Is there anything I can do to scare them off,or plant something they don't like.We normally have birds in the ...
