Re: JAMES LONG KEEPING ONION SEED

Unfortunately Garden Organics site, which was Henry Doubleday, doesn’t come up with a result. I’ll not give up the search but in the meantime I’ll have to grow Bedfordshire Champions.

Re: JAMES LONG KEEPING ONION SEED

Sorry but I missed your post Shallotman, not sure how as I usually get an email when there’s a reply to this thread. Any how that is good news as I’ve had a 100% failure with my JLK seeds. I had near enough 100% success with my Bedfordshire champion seeds so I’m blaming a lack of pollination or some...

Re: JAMES LONG KEEPING ONION SEED

Unfortunately further Googling draws a blank. I sowed my saved JLK seed today only 20 or so seeds, hopefully between me and Barkelberrybear we’ll be able to build up a reasonable stock of seed but it’s not a quick process.

Re: JAMES LONG KEEPING ONION SEED

Unfortunately I won’t have enough to share this year but, depending on how many germinate this spring, I will save plenty for seed next year. So keep an eye on this thread, I will gladly send some when, and if, there are some to spare.

Re: JAMES LONG KEEPING ONION SEED

I’ve not had any luck at getting any new seed. I've sorted what seed I got from letting half a dozen of last years JLK go to seed, but I’m afraid there won’t be any to spare. I promised some to Barkelberrybear, but there will only be enough to use for seed for 2023. Barkelberrybear… as I said above ...

Re: JAMES LONG KEEPING ONION SEED

Hi. I’ve had what can only be described as limited success. I replanted six onions, the same amount as I usually do for Bedfordshire Champion, but I’ve got very little seed from them. The only thing I did differently is to replant them at home rather than on the allotment, and I’m guessing it’s a la...

Re: JAMES LONG KEEPING ONION SEED

Why not let them sprout, and plant. Then next year you will have your own seed. Yes, I’ve re-planted six of last years JLK to go to seed this year for sowing next year....... hopefully! If I’m successful I’ll be back here beginning of March next year and should have plenty to spare. Would you sow t...

Re: JAMES LONG KEEPING ONION SEED

I’ve just realised I’ve dropped an enormous clanger The onions I saved to go to seed last year for sowing this year were Bedfordshire champions, the JLK I got from Irish Seed Savers were only in their first year in 2020 and will go to seed in 2021 for sowing in 2022. So unfortunately the seed I’ve s...

Re: JAMES LONG KEEPING ONION SEED

Message received and replied to. They really do live up to their name, we’ve only just finished last years, they were still as good as they were last autumn, at a guess they probably had another month in them before they started sprouting. Bedfordshire champion in my opinion do come a close second t...

Re: JAMES LONG KEEPING ONION SEED

Sorry don’t log in here very often so not kept up with this thread. I planted my own saved JLK seed today and I’ve got a fair bit left over so if anyone wants some PM me your address and I’ll post it.

Re: JAMES LONG KEEPING ONION SEED

So the story continues.
After a very bad start due to the exceptionally dry spring the JLK rallied and I’ve ended up with about 20Lbs of them. I’ve kept half a dozen separate to re plant next year for seed. Interestingly they faired a lot better than the Bedfordshire Champions.

Sorry to hear your news in another post Shallotman. If things take a turn for the better and you find yourself having difficulty getting a “pinch” of James long Keeping don’t hesitate to ask.

Re: JAMES LONG KEEPING ONION SEED

Really sorry about the delay Shallotman but I’ve only just seen your post and PM, I don’t log in that often. I’ve got some Bedfordshire champion from last year going to seed that are doing nicely, so I should be OK for seed next year. My James Longkeeping are coming on well and I‘ll earmark a few fo...

Re: Raspberry Conundrum

I’d just thin them out a bit and remove all the canes obviously older than last years. You may find the autumn fruiting ones fruit on last years canes or send up enough new canes to fruit this year.
