Deer damage on sorbus
I live in open rural area of the fens. But we do have a few herds of roe deer in the area. My garden is fenced, so they are not normally an issue. But they have decided to chomp my OH sorbus in front of the house. We have put up some obstructive mesh around the tree (so attractive!) but I was wonder...

Cool Chillies
Hi, I think it would be nice to have a roundup of suggested cool/ zero or low heat chillies, up to 500/1000 Scoville heat Units. While some think Jalepenos are mild (obvs eat far hotter ones, as these are 2000-8000 SHU), they are far too hot for us. Although they are made less hot by candying them! ...

Re: Pea query
Another excellent suggestion! Thanks all.
Mice and rats are around, but if I sow in pots rather than directly, they are not an issue. That and two cats who keep the rodents in line :

Pea query
Two years ago I tried peas for the first time - big climbing ones so I would get a decent harvest. Very excited for first pods but all were filled with pea moth larvae  Yuck! Really freaked us out and we got virtually no peas (TBH, we gave up looking bacause of the horror potential). I would ...

Re: Asparagus
We just got a new raised bed (with higher sides!) for OH's asparagus -old bed was held together with rope and hope :o . Of course the dimensions were a little different to the old, so there was some chopping out and replanting with fingers crossed. We put the usual load of compost on top and waited....

Re: There are two types of salt
There are lots of places that sell a wide range of salts and peppers (more types and variations than you could possible ever want or need really). This is one place - not a rec as I have not used them, but FYI: https://www.spicemountain.co.uk/product-category/salts/ FYI, I find vanilla salt lovely t...

Re: There are two types of salt
Yes, coriander (leaf) is not something I ever want to taste again. The reaction is a genetic olfactory receptor difference, not a personal preference as some believe. Just one or two leaves ruins a whole dish for me. I wish shops/restaurants would not use it so profusely or just make note of its pre...

Re: There are two types of salt
Clever idea! :o The first time a gf came too my house she said "OMG your spices and herbs are in alphabetical order!" But, hey, but I can find anything v quickly. OH never looks for anything in the kitchen, he just asks and I can tell him from the other room. (and yes I have a garden journ...

Re: There are two types of salt
I also have a collection of different salts (and peppers!) for different uses. I also use the larger grained/ flaked salts (e.g Maldon) as a finishing salt. Much less likely to over-salt, too. I read a book years ago that said never use "table salt" (mined salt) as it tastes awful. I was s...
