Re: Saving Seed

Real Seeds were very helpful, and their site is well worth a look. Aside from selling seeds, they also give a lot of information about saving your own seeds :-) I will be having a go at that later in the year.

Re: Postage wrappers for magazine

Which? also send the magazine in a compostable potato-starch wrapper now.

Re: Pumpkins

We grew pumpkins last year, and there was only one pumpkin per plant in the finish. That may be normal, as it was the first time I'd done it, I don't know for sure. I had the same with two varieties of squash.

Saving Seed

My partner is interested in saving seed, and has asked (for his birthday!) for a set of seed sieves. I've tried Googling, but all I can find are either soil sieves (with mesh far too large), or industrial (and very expensive) ones. Does anyone have any suggestions for where I could get seed sieves? ...

Re: Water-retaining gels

Hi, The company sent me a safety data sheet for the product. As far as I can see it is not hazardous in it's pure form, so unless it gets changed somehow in the process of going through the plant and then into the human it seems to be safe. The product/ingredient name is 2-Propenoic acid, homopolyme...

Re: Out of date seeds

Johnboy - my other half grew some pumpkins last year from seeds that were several years out of date. The plants and pumpkins were huge and vigorous, so if they were the 'poor specimens' I hate to think what good ones would have been like.

Re: pumpkins

My partner grew a LOT of pumpkins last year and they really were not worth eating - very bland - and very, very heavy. Fortunately (for me) mice or rats got at many of them.

Re: Water-retaining gels

Thanks for the replies There is no list of ingredients on the packaging, unfortunately. The plants look really healthy, and it seemed a shame not to eat the fruit. I think that if it were really harmful the warning would be larger and very explicit, so I'll leave them as they are and see what happens

Water-retaining gels

I noticed that using water-retaining crystals/gel was suggested twice in the July edition of the KG magazine. However, the water-retaining moisture control (Miracle-Gro) crystals I have say on the pack "for use with ornamentals only". I didn't see this until AFTER I'd put some in with toma...
