Re: Soil prep alternatives!
I no longer dig, apart from lifting tatties and that is done with my hands not a a spade, the garden fork is now just for digging lugworm or rag worms for bait. Just spread either compost or manure on the surface and the weather/worms do the rest.

Re: Summer Bits and Bobs.
I tried making nettle tea as a plant food, never smelt anything quite as bad before, but nettles do have lots of uses, a great substitute for Spinach, but as I don't like that, I don't eat it. You can make strong string from it like Ray Mears, but it's a right faff, so not done that either.

Pretty sure I got them from Dobbies, I guess it will be another couple or three months yet before they are in stock for next year.

Re: 2024 season begins
Meloine shallots have been very good, first time growing this variety, just lifted them and very pleased, one more success in a rather indifferent season so far.

Re: Summer Bits and Bobs.
My biggest failure this year has been the first lot of Charlotte potatoes, (very small) and Broad beans, decimated by black fly! Things that are going exceptionally well are, Carrots and Runner beans….strange, as the other plot holders are really struggling with theirs…..the Autumn planted Onion se...

Re: Summer Bits and Bobs.
My growing is fits and starts, some stuff failed(carrots eaten by slimy critters) whereas some stuff is looking really good(Broad beans, tatties, onions, even my umpteenth go at growing bulb fennel looks promising).

Re: Olive - a bit dahn souf centric this month
It's not just Scotland they ignore, nowhere north of Watford exists to many, now I get the population of the south east is twice the population of Scotland and Northern Ireland together, but they really could try a lot harder to include all their customers. I have subscribed to various Angling magaz...

Had a wander through the forest in the shade, plenty of Common Blue Butterflies in the tracks and rides, possible Speckled Wood sighting too.

Re: Lack of Butterflies?
On our walk round the fields we saw good numbers of Ringlet butterflies, they feed on the long grass round the field edges, at least as many as last year I think.
