Re: A question for chilli experts

I'm referring to the actual ripening chillis. I sow them in January so the plants are fairly big now and have a fair few chillis on them.

A question for chilli experts

Can anyone help with this please... This year I've sown chilli variety 'Jalapeno Summer Heat' (from Thompson & Morgan) which were some seeds I had left over from 2007. The first year I grew them they matured as per the packet illustration, from green to red. All the plants sown this year have ri...

Re: Best setup for climbing peas

I too grow tall peas. The method I use is to weave tall canes through heavy duty plastic coated wire mesh (the type you can pin to fences for climbing plants) and erect it upright pushing the canes into the soil. I grow lines of peas either side of it. At the end of the season it is fairly easy to p...

Can I get back to my old style forum?

Help please, I haven't been able to access the forum for a couple of weeks and have just discovered by phoning KG it was a problem with our ISP. Anyway, I'm back on but cannot view the forum 'old style' (is this called subza?) When I log in as I used to be able to do previously. I'm not very compute...

Thanks for the replies. Having sown 600 sets and hoping to have enough onions well until next year, it has been disheartening that probably 95% have been not fit to eat. I'm now having to buy onions which disgruntles me a bit but I'll try again next year. I'm also praying for a better season next ye...

Onion neck rot

My stored onions are a disaster! I think they have neck rot rather than white rot (I hope). I can only assume it is due to the very wet conditions at harvest time. Will it be safe to sow onion sets on my plot next year and is there anything I can do to prevent/alleviate the problem next year? Incide...

Thanks for the info.
JB, I don't understand what I mean either, other than it's what a catalogue I've just received tells me!!
I think I'll carry on as I did last year!
Thanks, June

Another garlic question.... I grew purple wight last year and had a good harvest from them. They kept really well in a cool brick garage right up until earlier this year. I've now read they are not a keeping variety. Should I not have stored them? Is it dangerous to do so? (!!) I've now got lots aga...

Congratulations, Primrose! Our female duck disappeared Wednesday. We were relieved she didn't nest in our garden! We have seen the two males each morning since, staying briefly to eat and drink. Then by surprise, the female arrived again today at 4pm for a quick feed and drink! We think she must now...

Hello Primrose Thanks for your reply. After being in a flap(!) about the ducks all bank holiday weekend, I phoned the RSPB (as I'm a member-but ignorant about duck habits!!) yesterday. They told me the drakes disappear off a few days after the egg laying is complete (normally about a dozen eggs) the...

Hello Di,
I think it can depend on how wet the summer is but in my experience they get to about five feet. I grow mine on the allotment on plastic coated wire mesh with canes woven through it to keep it upright. I start them off in root trainers then plant a row each side.

Hello Catherine. I don't know if my experience of Bowen is typical or not. I came upon it by complete chance twelve years ago when out at a function and just mentioning to someone there the problems I was having with my jaw. The woman I spoke to gave me a treatment there and then (sat in the ladies ...

We also have just had a duck and two drakes arrive in our back garden last Thursday. They've been back every day since and will only leave if shooed off! While it's lovely to see them in the garden, I'm concerned for them. We live in a typical suburban house, the garden at the back is not large (app...

Hello Compo, I also much prefer growing tall varieties. Much more crop for space taken up and cropping over a longer period. I've also grown Alderman previously and found them to be usually good. I've also grown Ne Plus Ultra, a very old variety which grows really tall and crops well. I think the fl...
