Re: An infallible way to germinate seeds?
I have successfully germinated my spring onions, ishykuro & leeks using the methods above and now have 1 to 2 inch spindly seedlings. What next please ???? I do not necessarily want to transplant outside yet, so should I transplant into seed trays keeping about an inch or so apart ?? With the le...

Re: Potatoes in grow sacks
I planted my new potatoes (Swift) 12 weeks back, there is no sign of any flowers and the greenery is half the size of my Charlotte (2nd early planted 10 weeks back) which are also in flower. As the Grow sacks advertise new potatoes in 7/8 weeks and the Swift is an early maturing variety I was wonder...

Re: Butternut Squash
I had a very successful first year of growing Butternuts, over 10 large squashes, this was with no trimming and letting them run rampant, however since then very limited success ( it was the warm summer 3 years back). Does the squash get all it's nutrients from the root system and leaves ? Mine also...

Re: Quality Birds Today
First swallows seen today, the last 3 years they have been around the 5th 6th of April so late this year !!
It's the advanced guard - they seem to arrive here have a rest and go back to tell their mates it's ok to arrive, and then a week later the mob arrive !!

Re: Spuds, Carrots & Blueberries
Johnboy I'm a South Devon man, so usually start things a bit earlier than some, but with the rainfall we do get a lot of blight hence the question on fleece. Don't want to use chemicals and have tried the Sarpo varieties but don't overrate them. (Come to sunny Devon where it rains six days out of se...

Re: Spuds, Carrots & Blueberries
Many thanks - will stick to 1st & 2nd Earlies to avoid blight, peas in guttering already and off to the Chippie for tea tonight - an original excuse "the experts on Kitchen Garden told me too".

Spuds, Carrots & Blueberries
No - not a Masterchef recipe but this years questions for my knowledgable fellow gardeners. Firstly - does putting fleece over potatoes help to reduce blight - a large commercially grown field nearby covers his potatoes with fleece, wondered why. Secondly - I remember somebody saying that they dilut...

Sparrowhawks
Our swallows are being picked off one by one by a sparrowhawk that comes into our barn and treats it like a McDonalds, I think they are protected so mustn't shoot them and I know it's natures way but it's horrible coming in to a mass of feathers - any ideas. Can't close doors because of the horses (...

Leaf curl
Early this year my early potatoes developed leaf curl, which then spread to my maincrop. A few are OK and some are now recovering but I have noticed that some of my outdoor tomato plants are looking a bit iffey. I try to rotate the potatoes, but they take up so much room there is some overlap, but I...

Carrot - thinning
Much to my surprise I will have to thin out my carrots - the rabbits haven't got them yet !! Can the thinnings be transplanted into other areas or is the risk of carrot fly too much.
Based on this success I might also try a later cropping carrot any ideas
Many thanks

Cauli - no heart yet
I bought the Spring Veg collection from the Telegraph, Cabbage and PSB no problems - however the cauli "Maverick" (creamy white heads in April) to date have plenty of leaves but no heart!! Any ideas if they will eventually heart up ?? The pack also contained Japanese onion Echo which is ve...
