Re: Raised beds

Thanks both. I watered everyday so I’m pretty sure that wasn’t the issue and the soil doesn’t seem compacted as I dug it the first year and riddled all the wood chips out of the second year and it seems lovely and friable. However I haven’t grown much in the way of long rooted plants and I didn’t ad...

Raised beds

Hi Everyone. I’ve now grown in our inherited raised beds for two years now and for both the yield has been disappointing. First year I was just seeing how things went, then I enriched the soil with well rotted manure so was hopeful this year would be better. Sadly not. My thought now is to move the ...

Re: Cabbage heart

I think mine are starting to heart now. I’m just a little concerned as they have quite long stalks, I’d say a good 6” to 8” or so. From memory I seem to remember my past cabbages having short stalks. Hopefully they don’t fall over and break.

Re: Cabbage heart

No idea Geoff. I didn’t have time to grow from seed this year so just bought from a local garden centre and label just said red cabbage.
From your pic though mine are much bigger hence I’m a little surprised there are no hearts starting.

Cabbage heart

Wondering if anyone has any suggestions on why my red cabbage dont seem to be hearting. They’ve grown well and are a little taller than I’d like but seem all leaf and no heart. I tried putting a feed on them and they are firmed in. Could it be the unseasonably hot spell we had in Scotland in late Ap...

Re: Spring Bits and Bobs.

Almost summer solstice, where has the year gone? The garden is not even vaguely tamed but I have made a start on the ground elder and cleaned the pond out, what a messy chore that was. Spend a couple of days taking an old wooden greenhouse down that one of our neighbours was getting rid off. A wee s...

Re: Winter bits and bobs.

Happy New Year everyone. Bought my garlic and didn’t get it in before the ground froze, same with rhubarb, so hoping a pot sowing will suffice. A bit snowy here which is actually making the garden easier to visualise. Chooks surprisingly have started laying eggs, just after solstice. Not a normal th...

Re: Autumn Bits and Bobs.

Planted some peas a while ago as saw an article that mentioned winter sowing peas to get an early start the next year. I now have some gorgeous pea seedlings but the weather has turned quite chilly here so not sure about popping them out under a cold frame. Think I may have another DIY moment and ma...

Re: Anyone Tried Foraged Foods in Recipes?

Hi.
I forage hawthorn berries, cleavers, brambles, wild garlic, rose hips, and use them at home to name but a few. I’ve been looking at making acorn flour this year but haven’t tried it yet.

Re: Autumn Bits and Bobs.

Been out looking for the comet but not seen it yet. We were even in a dark sky environment but perhaps too mountainous to get a good look at the horizon. Seemingly it is going to be around the next few days and give us a final chance to spot it before… well we get to see it in a future lifetime! Got...

Re: Leeks look like garlic.

OY!

I probably didn’t grow them very well to be fair. , they were my own sowing albeit from an open pack that someone had gifted me. I started them in root trainers and they had a great root system when I planted them out.

Re: Washing line

LOL OH. I was just aghast at the thought that people found a clothes line pointless. We found ours under a very overgrown area of the garden but popped a rotary one in. It’s not had as much use as I’d like this year but if it even vaguely looks like it will be warm/windy enough then the clothes are ...

Re: Leeks look like garlic.

It could be OH. I watered them daily but the beds are an unknown and full of bark mulch. I should get that resolved over winter though and am going to put the, rather lovely looking, contents of the compost pile that was left behind on them.

Leeks look like garlic.

I decided to pick some of the younger looking leeks to use as a side vegetable and to my surprise they have a bulb at the bottom like garlic but haven’t thickened up above it. What could cause this? The only think I can think of is the dogs do occasionally walk through the raised beds and possibly f...
