they are indoor, cordons in a south facing unheated greenhouse.

I always thought that day length helped the growing process though. Is that right?

Unknown apple variety

I think I mentioned somewhere before that our garden has a neglected orchard in it..... This year we've had our first bumper crop since taking it on and doing some severe pruning. We've figured out which are eaters and which are cookers too. But how do we find out what the variety is? The eaters are...

Tiny toms

One of my tomatoe plants has been very late in producing fruit but is now producing loads........ and I mean loads, probably around 30 plus of small tomatoes. What are the chances of them getting to harvestable size this late in the season?

HI, Getting in touch with BBKA is a good idea. Their members are very knowledgable and quite happy to come out and check what sort of swarm it is. If it is a honeybee swarm they will most likely even collect it and resite it. I've just joined BBKA and one of the members has given me a free nucleus o...

Plums and aphids/whitefly

My plum tree leaves looked white so I looked closer expecting to see some fungus or other but it is white with aphids and whitefly. It is only on one side of the tree and I'm not sure what to do about it. We don't use pesticides and it'd take a whole truck of ladybirds to move this lot. Any suggesti...

Thanks John. We'll try that. At the moment they are laying the wrong side of a 30' Christmas tree at the edge of a steep slope. Wonder if we can charge the family danger money for collecting them?

Personally I prefer to put a few leaves in a teapot and add some hot water. Leave for a few minutes and then pour adding a little honey as a sweetener

Magpies

Hi, Can anyone suggest a deterent [other than catching and killing one and hanging it near the henhouse] to stop magpies going into the henhouse and pinching the eggs. We've had no eggs since the weekend and I noticed a magpie puttering into the henhouse yesterday so it must be them. As of tomorrow ...

It's amazing the difference in advice between difference Drs. For 13yrs I worked as a QVN [qualified veterinary nurse] and every time I was bitten by a cat or dog etc had to be checked and tetanus jabbed. The last occasion of being bitten resulted in me going to the Drs and being told that after the...

Re: peas.....

My grandfather always soaked his peas in paraffin before sowing them. Is this a good idea? He always had a fantastic pea crop [which I could usually be found hiding in and eating  ]
