Re: Which tall/thich BambooVariety for heavy clay?

Can't you dig a bit of the root of that one out.

Or if you are over in England before long, you can dig up some of mine. It thrives on heavy clay.

Re: Burying carbon.

Could one just use some bags of ordinary lump charcoal and smash it up a bit? PS I have some of the bronze tools from implimentations. They are lovely to use. They recently made a garden fork (they apparently don't use them on the continent so there wasn't one in the range - it is the least successf...

My Miss Sugar'nSpice are laying :-)

I have thoroughly enjoyed breeding them and love to go and see what each of the new girls is producing This year I am putting the green egg laying girls back to a cockerel hatched from a blue egg to see if I can get an even nicer green AND I am trying...

Re: Strange eggs

Layers pellets often contain the minimum protein requirements for a hybrid layer which can be as low as 15 percent, but wheat is even lower even down to 10 percent. If your birds have total free range, and can get under trees and plants to find plenty of bugs then there will be no problem, but if th...

Re: Wind Farms v Wildlife

I rememeber seeing a program on some young scientists in Scandanavia somewhere I think, who had utilized the properties of egg membrane only letting water one way and set up cells with salt water and fresh water. Looked a really promising experiment - it was on coastal estuaries with river water and...

Re: Boiled Eggs

Hi darkbrowneggs, Thank you, now for the stupid question do I shake them with the pan full of water and knowing my luck most of it will end up over me Regards Arnie I think they have all answered already But sometimes I empty all the water, and sometimes leave a little in whatever is quickest. Wrap...

Re: Boiled Eggs

As was said, don't use when too fresh (eggs kept in the fridge can still be useful for cooking for weeks and weeks) Once they are boiled run them immediately under cold water, and shake the pan violently to cause the shells to crack all over Shell under water whilst still warm but not hot and the sh...

Re: Strange eggs

You can get soft shells as they come into lay, and though this is often genetic it is best to ensure they have sufficient calcium. Nowadays this is included in layers pellets (limestone is much cheaper than wheat!!!) but it is sometimes useful to make sure they have limestone or oystershell grit on ...

Garlic for winter planting - where to source them

Hi all - looking forward (after my rubbish garlic harvest) I am wondering if anyone knows the best place to source garlic for planting this winter. It always seems exceedingly highly priced from all the seed catalogues (got mine from T&M this year) Could I just buy some from a supermarket and pl...

Re: Hedgehog stops play

Hedgehog update Something exciting has happened. I made a feeding station from a clear plastic storage box and see them most evenings at dusk (9.15 to 10.00 p.m. with sunset @ 9.00 p.m. Only seen one at a time previously but last night we saw three or four. The first was a big one feeding in the bo...

Re: help - wasps nest

This works well for nests in the ground when you can work out where the entrance hole is. During the day make sure you have a super large barrow of nicely cut fresh lawnmowings. Wait until well after dark when all the wasps are home and the guards are on the doorstep. Then quietly and quickly tip th...

Re: Harvesting Sugar Ann Peas.

These are my favourite sugar snap. Once picked I hold the stalk end and snap it backwards then peel the "string" off if they are the fatter ones. Steam quite lightly or include in stir fry and they are lovely I just wonder as it has been so dry have yours had enough water to allow them to ...

Re: Shallots - replanting last years ???

They'll probably flower and give you next years seed. That's how I keep my banana ones going. Sooooo...???? If I plant them now they will run to seed next year When do I plant the seed, and when do they become harvestable shallots? Also - if I planted say Longnor and Golden Gourmet and Red Sun will...
