Re: Advice on heated propagators
I grew peppers and tomatoes in the greenhouse this year and most didn't ripen. House is coming down with green tomato chutney!!! We had a very poor summer here with low temps, my chillis are still in the greenhouse trying to ripen. I thought a heated prop would get stuff off to a better start. Last ...

Advice on heated propagators
I was considering getting one to start off veg and maybe flowers. For that reason I had thought of one with several compartments. Has anyone any advice on which makes or models are good or bad? Have seen one in the catalogues with 7 compartments that is windowsill shaped for £30+ but don't know if i...

Re: Questions on raised beds
The polythene was to staple to the wood to help prevent it from rotting quicker. It would only be around the perimiter and not on the bottom of the bed. Is this much benefit or will the wood last just as long without? How often do you have to replace yours? If I was able to make them and add fresh(i...

Questions on raised beds
Not sure if this is in the right section or not but I have a couple of questions on raised beds. I wanted to make beds to better divide a field I have. The beds are more to show the boundaries of where I am planting rather than to raise the soil. I had thought of using something like 6x2 pressure tr...

Re: Cabbages - a trick!
I had cut my cabbage and left the root there for a couple of weeks(laziness). Had not thought that a second cabbage would grow from this. Later pulled them out as I thought if I left them in it might encourage diseases to grow (first year growing veg). Saw no signs of new growth though.

Using fresh manure
I was wondering if it would be ok to use freshish manure in the autumn and dig it in and leave it until next spring or so. I had no well rotted stuff this year and my veg have suffered, the butternut squash plants have shrunk. I realise fresh will burn plant roots but if it is left over winter is th...

How long to harden off
Do I still need to harden of plants I've grown in the greenhouse at this time of year? I'm looking to plant out courgettes and sweetcorn. If so, how long for?

Re: Mould on potting compost
The 3 for £10 kind!! Not sure, will have to check. I got bought one of those all in one kits for growing aubergines, pot soil seeds all in one. It did the same thing and would have been different soil. I wonder is it not enough sun or water or maybe too much water. Aubergine plants were not affected...

Mould on potting compost
I have noticed that whenever I plant seeds and leave the pot on the windowsill to germinate, there comes a white fuzzy mold on the compost. I am using multi pupose compost. It is getting quite dense around my lemon basil. Should I leave it or try to remove it? Is this common or am I doing something ...

Re: Help required for a new gardener
Thanx Geoff! I thought of that too. My shotgun is at the ready, rabbit will go nicely with greenhouse cabbage!! I'll either get the fencing up or put temporary fencing around the plants until I get the field done. There a lot of pigeons around here so will put some netting too. I have managed to gro...

Re: Help required for a new gardener
The field is getting rotavated tomorrow. My plug plant brassicas arrived today!! I'll try to get some flat beds made by Monday and plant them in. I have planted them in trays for now. So can I just rake a little growmore into the top and plant them? I know I'll have to tramp the ground down as best ...

Re: Help required for a new gardener
I had the field sprayed 3 weeks ago with a product called Slingshot, I think. Similar to Roundup, the garden centre said it dies when it hits the soil so I could plant away once the weeds are dead.
I also bought a little pH test kit which I will use when the field is rotavated.

Help required for a new gardener
Hello all, just joined the forum. Over the next little while I will no doubt annoy everyone with stupid and regular questions but c'est la vie! I have recently moved house and have a small field to the side. I am currently trying to turn part of it into a vegetable garden, roughly 50 x 25 feet. My p...
