Re: Long term weather forecasts

If it is for Glastonbury, I would go for chest waders and a sun hat and start a trend 8)

Re: What insecticides do you use?

Hi Alan, I have only been growing vegetables for the last four years and last year was the only time (so far) I have had to resort to a non-organic control. Can't remember the make, but it was used to deal with a particularly heavy infestation of greenfly on my pepper plants that defied all natural ...

Re: Lemon Tree

Hi Geacher, thanks for posting this question. I have been considering growing a lemon and a lime but wasn't sure just how much protection they would need in winter. I have a polytunnel and an unheated greenhouse but I don't know if the trees would have survived the last two winters in there (-18C). ...

Re: F1 seeds . . . ?

I would have thought that as long as you are not trying to sell the seed or plants as the F1 then it isn't illegal. I sowed some seeds from an F1 chilli last year and got some good results although the fruit sizes (and heat) varied across the plants. A couple produced chillies that were more to my t...

Re: Question re the Veg Savings/Outlay Spreadsheet

Like Tony, I grow vegetables as a hobby and not for the cost saving. The biggest benefit for me, apart from vegetables that are as fresh as they can possibly be, is that because I live 12 miles from the nearest market/supermarket, the savings on petrol are significant. Fortunately for me I have a lo...

Re: Seed Potatos

Hi SB. I have grown Kestrel for a couple of years running and found them to be a good, well flavoured, general purpose spud. I have left mine in the ground and dug them when required and they have made good size tubers; some big enough to use as bakers. I also found some this spring, that I missed d...

Re: Artichoke 1 Rosemary 0

I have had to restock my herb garden with the exception of the oregano and thymes. I suspect that they were protected from the worst cold by a thick covering of snow. Unfortunately my 10 year old bay tree, which came with me when I moved 4 years ago, is just brown and crisp and the rosemary was the ...

Thanks for the information, Snooky. It looks like this might be my Birthday present :) . Too late for a couple of the beds but I still have 5 more to go.

Re: Soil Miller.

Hi Snooky, Thanks for posting this. I will be getting the push pull weeder with the 150cm ash handle soon and was considering adding either the tiller or the combi crumbler to my ‘wanted’ list. m When you say the handle felt thin and flimsy what are you comparing it with? I have raised beds approx 1...

Re: Springtime bits and bobs

Hi Monika, they are Hebrideans. It isn't obvious from the photo but the white lamb has black patches on its face. They are quite small animals and the ewes are very good mothers but I wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of the ram (Hamish); the horns are evil!. We are hosting them for our neighbo...

Re: Springtime bits and bobs

What a beautiful spring day here in Wales and just for good measure some brand new arrivals at our back gate! Still wet behind the ears!

I had to rescue the little white one as it rolled down the bank behind them into the garden. I got a head butt from 'mum' for my trouble.

Re: Please can we have some more 'funnies'?

This comes from 2 maths teachers with a combined total of 70 yrs. experience. It has an indisputable mathematical logic. This is a strictly mathematical viewpoint...it goes like this: What makes 100%? What does it mean to give MORE than 100%? Ever wonder about those people who say they are giving mo...

Re: Garlic Failure

I managed to get hold of some ‘spring planting’ garlic bulbs this morning so wish me luck with this lot which I will pot up later today. It is probably still too wet to think about planting anything out in the beds although we are experiencing some nice spring sunshine this afternoon after a very d...
