Re: Citrus trees

Thank you everyone for your help, sorry for delay in getting back. I have pruned all the trees back, so they look like bare sticks! Bit scarey. But already there are new shoots appearing that look really healthy. Now it is warmer, they are all outside in a sheltered spot. Home made lemonade next yea...

Citrus trees

I have recently bought a lemon, lime and orange tree. I thought they would like it in our heated conservatory . They got off to a good start, new shoots, leafs and flowers, then I notice red spider mite, the flowers set, then the baby fruit fell. I have sprayed for the mite, but the leafs are still ...

Re: Red spider mites on cucumber

Thank you everyone, it good to know its not just my greenhouse. This is the first year I've had problems with them . It's looking like I might loose my cucumbers though, they,re not looking well at all. The biological mites look a good idea, but I not sure about in a greenhouse with them being so se...

Red spider mites on cucumber

I have 2 cucumber plants in the greenhouse. They seem to have suddenly got red spider mites, it has spread so rapidly. I had a look in my books but there didn't seem to be much hope. Any ideas anyone? Is there a brand name of spray, my books lists chemical names I don't know much about. Am I better ...

Re: Slugs in compost bins

Thank for that. I wondered if I would be spreading slugs round the garden when I used the compost. I'm quite lucky here, there aren't too many slugs at the moment. I didn't know if there would be slug eggs or something in it as I used it.

Re: Slugs in compost bins

We get these white flys as well as the slug!! I always thought they were fruit flies and harmless, but maybe someone out there knows better than me. I just put the lid back on really quickly.

Slugs in compost bins

I use 2 compost bins in my garden and am happy with how they work. But I am getting increasing numbers of slugs living in them. I take out any that crawl up the sides, but I was wondering if it would be ok to use nemotodes in the bins. I fear that if I use the compost around the garden, I'll just be...

Re: Storing potatoes

Gosh, no. I wasn't thinking of throwing them away! Its just that there are alot with just a tiny slug nibble on it, & I thought it was best not to store these ones. There's not much gets wasted in our house. I will store them & keep them seperate to be used first, checking them from time to ...

Storing potatoes

I have had my best ever pots this year. I grew anya in old dustbins & they are perfect, and a main crop one (I've forgotten the type-lovely pink markings on them) in the ground. The main crop ones have quite a bit of slug damage, sometimes just one little hole on a lovely big pot. I understand i...

Re: Whats after my sweet corn?

Thanks everyone.
We are in E Cheshire where there are alot of badgers, but I'm not aware of any setts nearby and have never seen them in the garden or had any other damage. Every thing was OK this morning. Hopefully it was a one off.
Thanks for the tips about when they are ready, I was wandering.

Whats after my sweet corn?

This is the first time I have grown sweet corn & it is looking really impressive now. This morning one of the plants was crashed on the floor. On investigating, there were foot/paw prints on the raised bed, & the unripe sweetcorn had been eaten, the outer leaves appeared to have been riped aw...

Re: cabbage white butterflies and netting

I covered one of my raised beds for the first time this year with mesh. OH doesn't like it as its white & does stand out abit in the garden, but it did the job. A few slugs got it, but no problems with butterflies. They fly around it & try to get it. Its weighted down with bricks. I was wond...

Re: Sprouts - Petits Posy

Thank you.
I think I'll leave them alone now & see what happens later. Hope I have something for Christmas or I'll have to buy sprouts!
