thankyou both for your replies - he (dh - darling husband) has managed to get stump out and most of big roots a lot looked like they were rotten or diseased in someway. I now have him knocking down a brick shed that was a bit delapidated to make space for a greenhouse!!!!

what can i sow/plant now to fill space in raised beds

today we had the first potatoes I have ever grown - some first earlies can't remember which variety grown in bags only got enough from 1 bag for 1 meal but most were a good size and there are 6 of us!!! also picked ny first courgette today about 4 or 5 inches long my dh and I had 3 slices each fried...

thankyou for all your kind comments - have really enjoyed growing my veg am looking forward to being able to harvest some more of it although we have had loads of lettuce, some radish and some carrots oh and 3 strawberries so far! my courgette has flowered this morning an it looks like the beginning...

tony re ants Hi i've had the same problem with ants chewing off the stems of my cauliflowers and cabbage they seem to expose the bottom of the stem by loosening the soil then that part of the stem gradually gets thinner and thinner till the plant falls over and dies! I've put ant bait traps down now...

will try keeping it wetter and see if that helps - they are actually more prevalant in the shallower ends of my beds which would fit .

thanks guys have checked the stems they look healthy enough, although loads of ants in the bags maybe that one side of the bag just missed out on the watering. Will keep a close eye on them. Will keep them well watered although slightly difficult as where i live our water has been on and off for day...

the leaves are still green just limp and a bit curled at the edges i've only noticed it for the first time yesterday I'll just have to wait and see maybe!!

Hi I am growing potatoes in bags for the first time (first time at growing anything!) and the leaves of the potatoe plants in one bag are beginning to wilt - there are no scorch marks and no signs of obvious insect attack they are in the middle of a row of bags (all first earlies) and all the others...
