Re: Bird Processing.

I used to think just the same way, Elaine. Until one day, after we moved over here & had decided to buy a place that we could turn into a 'smallholding' type of place, I got to thinking..... We had a roast chicken dinner & I'd been reading about how the chooks are kept & what happens to ...

Re: Bird Processing.

Well, I have to say.... I actually found the killing the easy bit - the hardest bit on the first turkey was getting the cone right & getting the bird in there in the first place!! After all the hassle & having to modify the cone & start again, I finally got it all rigged up & then th...

Re: Keeping Rabbits for Meat

Hi nemo - I noticed you were from Kerry - nice place! I'm actually looking to get a couple of rabbits from Kerry - someone there already breeds for meat & has giants, so I'll be in touch with them when we're ready. Ah... plucking.... again, I think I'll start a new topic about this... I read a f...

Thanks John - what a nice forum!

Not wishing to hijack the thread, I'll start a new topic & explain a little about ourselves & what we're about.

Re: Preserve your produce

Yep, I agree that growing your own had become a dying past-time - but with the recent credit crunch period, a lot of folks started to turn back to the old ways - thank goodness I had an old nan that taught me how to respect the garden & use it productively! I had a massive crop of carrots last y...

Re: House to rent in Hertfordshire with large vegetable garden.

The house & set up sounds wonderful - and I expect that for the area, it's a reasonable rent as well. We moved over to Ireland just over 2 years ago & were followed by my eldest daughter 6 months later. After renting the new large house on an acre for the first year, we bought our place - ok...

Re: Keeping Rabbits for Meat

Well, we've spent the last year setting up for raising birds - we now keep chickens, guinea fowls, ducks & turkeys all harmoniously in the garden! This year is setting up for rabbits - and it's pigs next year! So rabbits.... as nemo says, new zealand whites are good meat animals, or there's the ...
