I have grown these before and although they have not cropped fantastically, they have provided a return and the huge amount of foliage produced has given my greenhouse a jungly feel and provided some shade for other planting! So I took advantage of the offer in KG earlier this year. Many of the slip...

I too have been perplexed by the receipt of potato planters without a message! At last an explanation - thank you!

Potatoes for Christmas

I fancied trying to grow some new potatoes for christmas lunch in my polytunnel. I bought some from a supplier a few weeks ago but I put them 'in a safe place' on receipt and only found them again yesterday. I was going to plant up some pots for my tunnel but got thinking about blight. All my outsid...

I was quite confused by this since our local council will not (at the moment?) accept vegetable peelings in the garden recycling bin/bag! I've never had to use one of these bags before (oh the luxury of a large compost heap), but a new house needing lots of attention and a brand new wormery (with so...

Excellent news it is! Hopefully Mortons / the KG readers will be able to persuade more shops to take it - I have been an irregular reader of Organic Garden magazine in the past as I have only ever found it in the Wisley shop and I only ever go there once a year or so (it being a 100 mile round trip ...

Planting garlic

Watching GW this evening. Did MD plant the garlic upside down? Will garlic right itself if planted the wrong way up? :?: Help! Planning to plant tomorrow (rain and work permitting).

Thank you

Hi Primrose I had the same thing last year with my green cabbages. I don't know what caused it, but assumed it was underwatering. However this year, when they've had even less water, they were fine (both green and red cabbages) - well at least the slugs thought they were as there is not a lot of the...

Mine too - well at least starting to show signs. I dug up all the outside plants yesterday and removed all the toms - loads (and loads) of green tomatoes - hopefully they're not infected and will ripen.

We can't have bonfires yet on our plots - what are you doing with the infected haulms?

Know your enemy

Euch, but intersting to know that the huge orange things I find lurking in my greenhouse at ths time of year are black slugs! On slug disposal, I have always found the busy road at the bottom of our garden useful - any slugs that survive the game of 'chicken' (crossing the road) deserve to be allowe...

Horseradish

Following on from Johnboys explantion of how to grow horseradish non-invasively, if it is all picked at once, how do you keep it? I've just dug up my plants and replanted some young thongs, but can't possibly use all of the roots I now have - can it be preserved or frozen?

Thanks

Spanish Gardening

Hi I don't think the crops that the Spanish grow for themselves ever make it to our supermarkets. Tomatoes in Spain are usually mottled green and red and very tasty - they wouldn't quiet get past our supermarket buyers - we get the red tasteless ones grown in huge polytunnels that the Spaniards woul...

Broad beans

My October planted seeds are now 1/2 to an inch hugh and looking healthy despite the cold - which is more than you can say for me. If it is going to be really cold this winter, should I cover them with fleece? I would hate to lose ANY of my favourite veggie plants.
