Re: Sizzling Summer Bits and Bobs.

Today I felt very brave and got stuck in to the top bed on my allotment which has got 'out of control'! Our plots renew on 1st Sept and they usually inspect shortly afterwards so it's got to be done. I had some fruit bushes, and herbs in it and I've come to the conclusion that I need to take it back...

Re: Sizzling Summer Bits and Bobs.

MattW, apologies for the delay in replying 'Would you mind sharing which one? I’ve been looking at some but wasn’t sure which reviews to trust? Thanks in advance' I have a ClimeMET weather checker. It tells me temp in and out, humidity in and out, air pressure, trend for sun-cloud-rain, sunset and s...

Re: Sizzling Summer Bits and Bobs.

Primrose, delivery drivers seem to be a mixed bag, any we get are pretty good about coming and knocking but at my son's home they have one who puts parcels in the green wheelie bin! Just got to hope it's not bin day! I don't have a rain gauge but have got an electronic one that I have in the kitchen...

Re: Elephant garlic

Perhaps its a case of treating it more like a veg than a flavouring.

Re: Elephant garlic

I've seen it on sale in the Garlic Farm down here on the Isle of Wight, picked it up and given it a good sniff and put it back down again. The smoked garlic always smells divine but doesn't seem to translate that smell into flavour so I stick with the standard garlic.

Re: Sizzling Summer Bits and Bobs.

Pleased you managed to get your reading through Geoff, they must be getting a lot like that this year. We gave up on oil and got a wood burning range that does cooking, heating and hot water. Keeps me fit in winter but I have warned the old fella that I will not be barrowing logs uphill when I'm 80!...

Re: Sizzling Summer Bits and Bobs.

Eon: No, we're not expecting it that high, take some back.
Geoff: But this was what you wanted me to do right? Generate electricity?
Eon: We didn't expect you to generate this much, where do you think we'd be if we paid out to everybody?
Geoff: Not in breach of contract...?

Let us know how it goes!

Re: Sizzling Summer Bits and Bobs.

My runners are looking very thin on the foliage, loads of blackfly, and a poor set. Not just me as most on the upper slopes of the allotment site are like it. The people on the lower end are not so bad. Perhaps it's the effect of being on the top of a very free draining site.
And it's nice to be back!

Re: Sizzling Summer Bits and Bobs.

I haven't been to this forum for at least a couple of years as work was rather demanding, I pop back and it's lovely to find you all still here! Hopefully I will have more time now I'm partly retiring. I still have my allotment although it's taken a bit of a back seat lately, so that is going to get...

Re: Parsley-sage-rosemary and thyme ?

I have a rosemary plant that came from a cutting of my mother's plant who in turn got a cutting from a chap along the lane back in 1955. It is a tatty looking thing with thin, almost greyish leaves but it has a much better flavour than the lush green rosemary plants you can buy.

Re: Top tips to start seed off

Top Tip is Pa Snip's... sow later and if possible outside. That way you have room for the must sow indoors stuff. I sow all my climbing beans, french and runner, direct in the soil now with no noticeable difference to cropping. And I must admit to feeling quite smug when everyone else's planted out ...

Re: Parsley-sage-rosemary and thyme ?

Golden oregano, that's proper oregano not golden marjoram, has a better, stronger flavour than the green and dries very well. I have a couple up the allotment which get harvested with shears a couple of times a year and again I use the dehydrator. I've never used carrot leaves.
