Re: Harvest bits and bobs

I have tomatoes ripening both in the greenhouse and outside but only just. I've removed the lower leaves on all my greenhouse plants, as well as any leaves showing signs of damage and I've removed the lower leaves on one set of my outside tomatoes as well because they were looking a little battered....

Re: Khol Rabi

I'm growing it Azure is the variety (no Star on the end though). We tend to grate it onto salads or use it as a substitute for cabbage in coleslaw. I'm told steaming is good but we have yet to find a 'cooked' recipe that doesn't completely destroy the flavour .... but then we haven't steamed any yet...

Re: Problems at our plot.

Sorry to hear of the problems that you have been having. I don't know anything about allotments or protection of the ground they're on etc but is it possible that the Council/Land owner is deliberately letting this happen so that at some point they can invoke some small print clause or other to 'leg...

Re: Cropping "problems"

I'm still way to novice to be offering advice though I can offer this advise with confidence, get yourself a comfrey patch going for massive rewards. Don't do yourself an injustice Richard, you have picked up and stored more knowledge through experience than you realise and this is clearly visible ...

Re: Cropping "problems"

My runners were slow to get started but have finally started to crop properly, as of yesterday. Climbing beans have been cropping well for last few weeks and the Mangetout have been fabulous this year, both in numbers and taste. Found the first reddening tomato in the greenhouse yesterday The courge...

Re: Why do you grow Sweet Peas?

Hello Lyndapet You snuck in when no one was looking. Welcome and happy growing Good tip about getting rid of beetles - thanks. I tend to buy mixed variety packets because I like the surprise of not knowing what is coming. This year my youngest gave me a packet of mixed sweet pea seeds for Christmas...

Yorkshire and the Humber are definitely in need of a large amount of rain :)

We'll be under another drought/hosepipe ban if we're not careful

Re: Missing you....

It could just be that the bad weather last year and the dreadful start to this one has disheartened a lot of new or novice growers and they haven't bothered this year. Or maybe the cold start to this season did so much damage to seedlings and young plants, that many haven't bothered resowing this ye...

Re: Carrots again.

Oh yes I remember them well As for carrot root fly, I'd say that you're not out the woods yet where those pests are concerned As I understand it they come in two waves, the first is generally over by end of May and the second begins in late August! This year, with the late start to spring etc, I wou...

Re: Good old days

I would have thought spraying salt onto plants is sailing very close to the wind. Salt spray can be very damaging to coastal vegetation. I've seen woodland defoliated after storms. On the other hand, most of the vegetables we grow originated on the coast: beetroot, Brassicas, onions, asparagus. Bra...
