Ido try to buy local. Eggs always - usually outside someone's house. Veg etc - we have a lovely farm shop near us - expensive though. If I go to supermarket I try to buy local there if I can. Fruit - only if its shipped from Spain/Holland. Meat I usually get from a local butcher who has a board outs...

I agree with everything everyone has said. My husband has a really stressful job and is hopeless at trying to relax, but the allotment does it for him! he's so happy over there. It is hard work at times, but its for yourself so feels different, plus you can stop if it gets too much. Its therapeutic.

I also buy pond netting, £1.40 per metre here in mid suffolk, does a good job.

HFW's Glutney chutney! 1k overgrown courgettes/marrows OR 1k pumpkin (courgettes don't need to be peeled but obv pumpkin will) 1k red/green tomatoes OR 1k of plums 1k cooking/eating apples 500g onion 500g sultanas or raisins 500g light brown sugar 750ml white wine or cider vinegar made up to 1 litre...

Glutney Chutney!
Started this chutney early today, from H F-Whittingstall's River Cottage Year, its a great recipe, excellent for using up gluts of courgettes, toms, apples and plums. Will post info if anyone wants.

...but sowing in modules is pretty much foolproof and removes the need for "a bit of care".

I sow beetroot in a seed tray and then transplant, with a bit of care it works fine.

I too have noticed that I've hardly had any slug damage on the allotment this year, also no blackfly (fingers crossed!).
