Re: Tricks of the trade.
As Geoff has brought up the subject of labels may I suggest that you write them in graphite pencil or crayon. Contrary to what the manufactures say there are no permanent marker pens as they all fade in sunlight. Also using pencil or crayon they can all be reused several times. JB. When I worked fo...

Re: Re-newing your car insurance
My house and contents policy is with the same company I have used for the last thirty years. We were flooded in 2004 (Sunday evening), Monday phoned the company, Tuesday the skip and the men arrived to remove the damaged carpets and furniture. Heaters and fans installed to dry out, when dried out, t...

Re: My Website
I am very impressed with your website as I would not know where to start to make my own web site. Keep up the good work. Most ISP's supply a webspace where you can construct your own website. You need an editor to write your pages (an easy one to use is Open Office), I used to use Open Office but n...

My Website
I have been webmaster for several sites for some years, as I am now 80 I decided to hand over to a younger member of our club and only run my own domain and my step daughters driving school domain. I have transferred all my files to a new domain. It contains some gardening info., photo's and compute...

Another source of fuel might be to find out where tractor enthusiasts get TVO (tractor vaporising oil). That is a more volatile oil (only suitable for pressure burners).

As a retired decorator, make sure that the name on the tin is the same (not a different line) and wherever you buy it it will be the same. When I was decorating I had a customer alerted me to the fact that a certain chain were selling a branded vynil wallpaper at much less than I could buy it at tra...

Re: Shed Break-ins
I had a 50 metre extension cable and drum stolen a while back. I replaced it but took the cable off the drum (it's not so easy to handle when its just coiled up, about two metres to a turn (that's 25 turns done up together). After the breakin I fixed an alarm up with a motor horn and battery. It'll ...

Re: River rhubarb
Sounds suspicious. Rhubarb leaves contain Oxalic Acid (toxin), I've always assumed that green stalks would be the same. Potatoes and tomatoes have a similar problem, the stalks and leaves contain a toxin, green tomatoes must not be eaten raw but OK when cooked. Green potatoes must not be eaten, slig...

Re: Tomatoes
Why is it that the "Shirley" Tomato seeds are so expensive yet when I went to a local garden centre the plants were the same price as any other Tomato plants. I bought one plant (99p) and am taking cuttings (sideshoots) off it, I expect to get about a dozen or more plants this way. I did i...

I get sick and tired of programs where you don't know if it's supposed to be gardening or DIY/Building.

Re: NETTING RECOMMENDATION
I have just done the same thing to protect my brassicas from pigeons etc. I bought 10 metres of "pond netting" from a local garden centre. They have it on roll and it's sold by the metre (£1.10), it's two metres wide. I have 1 metre wide beds so cut 1.5mtr x 2mtr pieces (for economy). They...

I had topped it up, but when I saw that it was thin and black I decided to drain it all out and replace it (sae30). Not sure how the choke should be positioned at start (pushed in or pulled out), I think this answers the problem, it has been run with the choke on. It floods the engine with fuel whi...

Re: Grafted tomato plants
As said before in my post, treat them the same as shrub cuttings.
Break them off when about four inches long, dip in hormone powder and plant in a 3-4" pot. Keep moist. Pot on into 10" or 12" pots or however you grow your Tomatoes.

I used to use paraffin heaters but have come to the conclusion that electric fan heaters are a better proposition. As said before, you have more control over the temperature.

Re: Grafted tomato plants
Slightly off track, but relevant. Last year I saw a posting about Tomato cuttings and thought I would give it a try. After all, the price of some seeds is way over the top. I had some seed grown plants of "Shirley", I took out the side shoots and treated them as I would shrubs. The result ...
