Re: has that early freeze convinced plants spring is imminen
on my allotment the only thing showing signs of growth is, you've guessed it, the weeds; but I did hear a delightful song being thrown back and forth by two coal tits in different trees last week

Re: unusable squashes
I sowed a packet of mixed squash seeds; fresh last year. I have tried to cut into one of them with a carving knife, without success; no, I haven't cooked one of them for the simple reason that they are completely impossible! Most of them are yellow and ball shaped, about 4/5 inches across. Two or th...

unusable squashes
can anyone tell me what I have done wrong? I harvested what I thought would be a good crop of various squashes in autumn of last year, but they're all like solid granite; not only are they inedible, I can't even cut into them with a carving knife - help!

Re: damaged broad beans
sorry, I didn't explain clearly enough; the pods are developing just fine, not deformed or wilting; they were fed with blood fish and bone on planting and have had a feed of chicken manure pellets in the last month and have been watered. The leaves are not in the slightest way affected.

damaged broad beans
can anyone offer me a suggestion as to what has caused some of the developing pods on my broad beans to go black? These were overwintered Aquadulce Claudia, kept under a tunnel cloche for most of the winter and growing away apparently in fine condition; my first thought was that possibly frost might...

Re: BREAKING: The Edible Garden Show postponed until 2011
can't help thinking that if they can't get enough sponsors this year when 'grow your own' is, in advertising terms, so sexy, they won't stand much chance in another year's time when the fashion will have moved on.......that's a shame

Re: Lighter nights are just around the corner
on the subject of keeping up with the neighbours - my total 'Christmas' decorations this year consisted of a single wreath outside my front door made entirely with greenery from my garden. I'm trying to cope with my husband's total lack of understanding as to why I want a (tiny, 3 poles) allotment i...

Re: salad leaves
I've roughed up the surface of the growbag, taking the whole of the top plastic off; watered it well with organic liquid feed; and sown a mix of two salad leaves packets; I'll thin a bit if and when I get any germination. The bag is in a very small greenhouse (up against a fence) and gets plenty of ...

Re: Too late for green manure?
I just sowed some red clover to overwinter on my (mini) allotment, newly acquired - keep your fingers crossed it isn't too cold for it to germinate
