Re: Tomato ripening and peppers in pots
Hi Johnboy I did put a flyscreen over the open door this year to stop the cabbage whites leaving catepillars on my toms. its a heck of a job finding them and picking them off. The cucumbers where very poor this year and I wondered if I had also kept out friendly insects that would have pollinated th...

Re: Tomato ripening and peppers in pots
Thank you all for your kind advice and support. Clearly if we are lucky enough to have a greenhouse with borders we should be using them. I will continue to leave my doors open when I feel like it as I think the added circulation is good for my plants, they are still sheltered. A great point some of...

Tomato ripening and peppers in pots
Hi all A friend of the wife who visited the garden has made me think that I am dong things without thinking and maybe not getting the best out of my resources. She challenged me on why I leave the greenhouse door open all summer ( have a net to stop butterflies etc) when it is the heat that ripens t...

Re: Sowing chilli seeds now?
Hi al In my mind there are two parts to this. First is its our hobby and we want to get on and get our hands dirty after the winter and its fun to experiment and see what you can get away with. Second there is great homegrown tasty food from strong healthy plants. You get the best of that from being...

Re: Anybody spraying against tomato blight?
Hi all
returned from a 4 day trip to France to find one tomato has poked out through the open door and the tips of those leaves are brown. Nothing anywhere else so far.
I'm going to cut that one down but what should I spray with?
I'm in Salisbury by the way.
Thanks

Re: Potatoes in grow sacks
This is very interesting, keeping your own seed potatoes.
If I keep some Charlotte from these bags can I re-use them as seeds this year for Christmas spuds? Always wanted to try that.

Hi All
If Charlotte don't flower how do I know when to harvest them?
Had a feel around the bag and unless they were having fun and scurryinmg away from my hand as it approached I have very little to show just now....

Re: Sweetcorn loner
Thankyou all.
Think I'll just sow the rest of the packet and see what happens. I always have problems getting edible cobs anyway. They always sem to come out of the pan too chewy....
Any other advice on getting them from seed to tummy?
David?

Re: Sweetcorn loner
Thanks very much - I get the idea. I garden at home now in some Harrods raised beds and there is knowone near at all. Maybe I'll donate it to the lads down the allotment. I owe them for the years of advice so this is small recompense. I'll also probably learn a lot just by going down for a chat. I m...

Re: Dwarf Beans Safari LATE
I agree completely. The old seed was hopeless and frustrating. The new seed just leaped out of the ground.
I'm now going to make sure I use up all the bean seed this year and freeze the surplus then spend £2.50 next year on fresh stuff.

Hi All
Having sown some old swetcorn seed just to see if it came up I got one plant. Will it produce on its own or does it need cross pollinators? Ive always grown 8 in a square patterm before.
Thanks

Re: Potatoes in grow sacks
My bags are quite tall (collapsible green things from the Pound shop) so I was thinking I would plant extra leeks in them as they have the depth.
See a problem with that?
Thanks
