Bird Boxes and Bumble Bees.
The bird boxes in my garden are being utilised as normal by Blue and Great Tits - apart from one which has been taken over by Bumble bees. What, if anything should I do? Any advice welcome.

Re: Government consultation on phasing out peat use
I am siding with Primrose on this. I have tried several brands of peat free compost and have yet to find one that is half as good as peat. Sorry,I have yet to find a suitable alternative and will continue to use peat for raising seedlings.

White Rot
I have just taken on an allotment and the previous owner has advised me not to grow onions as the plot has white rot. I have heard of a method which involves crushing lots of garlic, adding it to olive oil or something similar, leaving it to soak for a while, draining off the garlic flavoured oil and...

Scorzonera - advice
I have grown scorzonera for the first time this year. I have dug a few roots and they seem to be a good size. Does anyone out there have a tried, trusted and tasty method of cooking them?
Thanks

Re: "French" Shallot Sets.
I can offer some detail on growing French shallots in Scotland. I have been growing them (all over Scotland) for 25 years with no problems. Consistently producing good crops which have stored better than my Dutch shallots on occcasions.

Re: Duff Seed?
There is still time for your second sowing to emerge but the non-appearance of your first batch is a concern.
If there is nothing from the second lot , I guess you have had a duff batch. Even if conditions were not perfect I would have expected something to pop through.

Re: Best veg for the highlands?
hello I used to live on Speyside at 1000ft above sea level. I had success with most veg but do NOT be in a hurry to plant/sow. I have had potatoes completely blackened with frost on 28th June! I had good crops of rasps, strawberries and gooseberies. On the veg front, I grew cabbage, potatoes, carrots &...

Re: Potatoes information needed
Hello Catherine I would suggest that you can delay chitting for a few weeks yet. Keep the potatoes in a cold but frost free place and then in mid Feb set them up in trays to chit. It is not too important for Desiree as they are your main crop mbut it would be beneficial for Epicure as they are a fir...
