Re: Summer Bits and Bobs.

Well proud of myself today as moved to Plot 2 & really progressed. Every time I thought I had covered Plot 1 it was covered in weeds again, but Plot 2 has the fruit trees so less to do overall. All cleared, weeded, cut back, fed, harvested to the little entrance from Plot 1. Just the 3 Brassica ...

Re: Products I've liked

I find the big name pizza outlets are pretty bland & sorely lacking in the amount of topping in relation to the price & Mr is not so keen on them either. The supermarket ones better but limited toppings. I buy plain Margherita bases & them pimp them to what we are in the mood for, be it ...

Re: Soil prep alternatives!

They have a Young Farmers in Hampshire, but nothing here in my area, probs in Wiltshire or way north Dorset. Funnily this evening I got an e-mail from Kings selling a variety of single seeds, but not really comprehensive in detail but did mention white mustard's in relation to club root. I also made...

Re: Soil prep alternatives!

Cheers for the responses everyone! Colin thanks for the idea of mushroom compost, that's an option I haven't considered so will do some searching. OH I would like to try green manure but my neighbour had the vapours when I mentioned it as he said it did not break down when dug in, but his crops were...

Soil prep alternatives!

Contacted my friend for the phone number for the dairy farm I get my cow muck from as I couldn't find it. She looked & checked & tried to ring them but no luck, but was told by a friend living in the area that he is not keeping the dairy cows now, just doing crops. I have tried to ring him b...

Re: Summer Bits and Bobs.

Plodding on regardless, but another warm day so apart from watering I avoided the tunnel. Not an issue for the plants in there & finally have some toms colouring but the couple of sows I did when it was cooler are not playing, but was just filling gaps & they might show a bit later! I keep f...

Re: 2024 season begins

I've not heard of this variety before so I had a look online, funnily only Suttons has come up with them, but not in stock which is expected. I can't remember the variety I have this year but very mixed sizes, side by side with same conditions one is struggling but the other was perky & happy.

Re: Summer Bits and Bobs.

First time ever the blueberries have not been stolen by the birds; they usually nick them as soon as they colour & beat me to them. I think I understand why they are way too small to interest them or me, so looks like it's time to give them more room next year. To date even the slimy things are ...

Re: Summer Bits and Bobs.

Much nicer down there temp wise today, but a light drizzle almost continuous, but it truly was light & did not bother me at all - well when my specs were off anyway. Another day of weeding mostly as the weeds just keep coming up so quickly, I just started on Plot 2 without my usual walk around b...

Re: Summer Bits and Bobs.

I think I got too much sun on Friday, I've been lethargic all week end. Not full on heat stroke as had that before & not pleasant. Fortunately no signs of temps near that for the next couple of weeks, but must be careful & just stay short periods to water if any repeat in these temps in the ...

Re: Summer Bits and Bobs.

It was hot today, little thermometer on the shed said 30C & tunnel was saying it was 38c inside. I put on so much factor 30 I was sticky & had little bugs & leaves stuck to me when it was time to go but it was lovely washing them off in the trug, cooled me down nicely for the sticky bus ...

Re: Summer Bits and Bobs.

Lovely day down here, warm but a sea breeze. Filled the butts before the hose chaos, but only got this warmth for a few days & it's not excessive like some summers. I had an early visit from my friend dropping off some bits in their clear out & all useful, especially the unopened packs of fe...

Re: Summer Bits and Bobs.

Well no plot work as it did not stop raining until this afternoon. Clive I think my rain got the memo about the number of rain drop clouds so played it safe with a bit of all 3! :) Fortunately the sun got a bit bored with the antics & is now in charge & going to stay on guard for a few days ...

Re: Ants in container?

Welcome to the forum amydon! It is definitely not a daft question as the ants are out big time this year. There are lots of options, disturbing them regularly will encourage them to move on, as will watering the nests regularly & if lucky you will see them vacating the nest with carry eggs. Issu...
