Re: Tasty Garlic

Hi Colin, The Chinese garlic issue is one I have come across. The taste is quite unpleasant to those who can tell the difference, kind of metallic and just not nice. I once complained at a restaurant because they had used chinese garlic to make their aioli. It was revolting, I couldn't eat it. My OH...

Re: Mid Summer Bits and Bobs.

Oh, I dug up the garlic last night just before dusk. I'm very happy with it. First thing I planted in the new patch at home :)

Re: Mid Summer Bits and Bobs.

I had craft fairs both days this weekend. Saturday was just about bearable, as there was a breeze, but packing down in 30 deg wasn't fun. Yesterday was very challenging. Set up at 8am was already 25 in hot sun. It just got hotter and hotter, under the gazebos there was no breeze and just heat accumu...

Re: Use of well composted horse manure in the veggie plot

Having taken up 40yr old + hardstanding to get a new veg patch established, I was faced with horrible stony, claggy clay with lots of dead roots in it. I have since added 20 bags of Mr. Muck composted manure and the soil is looking a little better. I am feeding well this year, as the ground has been...

Re: Early Summer Bits and Bobs.

Westi, my garlic shows no sign of withering leaves, the sure sign its ready to harvest. It's still growing green & strong. How much longer do I leave it? Lettuce (little gem) either bolted when it was dry or are now skeletons post slug attack. I think we've had about 4 out of the 20 or so I plan...

Re: Early Summer Bits and Bobs.

The week's tally was 6 Cobra beans. We had them for dinner yesterday with the roast. Had to involve shop broccoli I'm sorry to say, as I've not the space to grow any.

Re: Early Summer Bits and Bobs.

It is Primrose. We've been launching them over the garage roof! A few nights ago we picked up about 40 of the fat little buggers (sorry!) Some of them missed (I can't throw for toffee) and ended up next door. I'm sure that's just the tip of the iceberg, but it all helps I suppose. My husband...

Re: Early Summer Bits and Bobs.

Mine too, but it's only 2 x 4m! The garlic will be coming up soon, it looks amazing above ground, lets hope its as good below. I can then plant some calabrese, if the persistant slug army doesn't finish them all off first, I only have 4 plants remaining. All the kale and PSB seedlings have been demo...

Re: Early Summer Bits and Bobs.

I'm only growing cobra this year. they have been painfully slow, there's finally about, I think, 3 beans almost ready. What we'll do with three beans, I've no idea, its a bit like The Good Life and their one egg.

Re: First time growing Kalettes, have we lost them?

I have plants about 8" tall, they look OK. In addition, I've only just sown tuscan Kale, broccoli and purple sprouting, so I'd say it's not too late to sow again. :) Good luck.
