Courgettes have been amazing.
I did not get any carrots to germinate. Being a newbie and not knowing any better, I used last years seed, thinking it would be ok. I've since read on this forum that I should use fresh seed each year. Better luck next year.

Thanks all. I think I'll try either the one in Alan's link or Plum Puddings over the weekend - they look similar. I'll remember to check for insects too

Rust on Broad Beans same as Leek rust?

The wet weather in early July has brought on some rust spots on my broad beans. The beans are nearly over now and finished harvesting - they were yum and the rust didn't seem to affect the yield as the beans were well progressed when the rust came. I'll clear and burn all the branches and leaves and...

Courgette flowers - ideas for use

Just wondering what others do with their courgette flowers? I'm quite new to veg growing and this is the first time I've grown courgettes. All I've seen is recipes for tempura batter and frying. I'm going to try some just raw in salad I think. Will I need to remove any part of the flower, or is it a...

Thanks for the extra information, Johnboy. The commercial tomato growers using the bees to maximise their yield makes total sense. Also, I now know why some of my courgettes have not fully formed: They have not all pollinated after all. I'll have a go at hand fertilising too. Thanks for my birds and...

Hi Alan,
Thanks for the explanation and the link. All is now clear. I'll be going home tonight to shake my tomato plants gently and leave the insects to carry on doing their thing on my veg patch. :D

Vegetables and fruit requiring pollenation

Hi, I am new to veg and fruit growing. I am confused about which fruit and veg need pollen to fertilise and which are self fertile. I am growing and harvesting runner beans, broad beans and courgettes on the patch and growing tomatoes in my greenhouse. I believe these veg/fruit need insects to polle...
