Probably all the green (and blue/purple) parts are poisonous? Maybe the seeds are edible (I'm not going to try!) like poppy seeds, where the rest of the plant is poisonous too. The birds also like poppy seeds.

Graham meal is finely ground whole wheat kernels, not sifted. It may be an American expression, sorry. Makes better bread than 'lumpy' wholemeal.

It is not advisable to eat decoration pumpkins/squashes as they can be bitter, and if bitter, they may be slightly poisonous, or at least not good for you. In normal years the standard summer squashes/courgettes should provide ample fruit for experiments, but I admit it is not one of those years her...

Chioggia

Alas, they only have the beautiful white and pink rings when raw - turn a disappointing pale rose when cooked. Can be used raw in salads, with a spicy dressing I suppose :?

Saving shallots

My old vegetable gardening book says: Big shallots will make a lot of small ones, small shallots a few big ones. Try both to see if it is correct.

Making bread

I don't know if this applies to a gas oven, but in an electric oven you are always advised to put the loaves in the lower part of the oven. I bake all our own bread, and always put the tray on the lowest shelf, and the crust is never hard.
