Hi there Having had a very successful crop of parsnips this year (I did the geminating on kitchen paper inside) I have been exitedly biding my time & have left them in the ground as I heard somewhere they tasted better after a frost. I decided to sneak a peak at some over the w/e - & was gut...

Thanks for the ongoing info & chat ... I now have parsnip seeds with little tails, & like someone else mentioned, not enough loo rolls! I will get more pots for some (I got a bit carried away in how much seed I germinated!) as I won't have room for all in pots. Do you think I could plant som...

Many thanks for all of your responses, I really appreciate this & will give it a go. I especially like the idea of being able to plant out the seedling & loo roll direct - that hadn't occured to me atall!
Cheers

germinating parsnips inside

Hi all, I've read reference to people germinating parsnips on kitchen paper on another post - is there science in doing this, or are you just laying out seed on damp kitchen paper & waiting til it germinates ... like we used to with mustard & cress. I've always grown my parsnips straight int...

Many thanks for your help both of you - so I will start seperating the bulbs.

I'm also the cook so no worries there ... only myself to offend. I like the idea of pesto making though, so might give that a go.

Thanks again

does size of garlic cloves matter ?

Hi There I had a good crop of Solent white garlic last year, so thought I'd sow some of the harvest I have left instead of buying new ones ... However, is it best that I plant the largest cloves out of the bulbs & leave the smaller for eating ?? Or does the size of the clove / bulb not relate to...

Why have my onions failed for 3 years running?

Hi - Since I moved to my new plot I have failed to grow any onions despite great garlic and leeks. At the old place I planted sets and had good results. I tried sets the past two years here, both years they sprouted, but only grew 6 inches tall, then died or stayed that size all summer. The 1st yr w...

I think it must have been the thinning from what you say, i dont think the carrots had 3" each. So thats something to look more carefully at in future - also the moisture might have been more of a problem if they were competeing with carrots so close.
Thanks for your help OH....

Big parsnips, useless carrots in same patch

Hi - Can anyone offer any advice, to why my parnips - hollow crown -(which were planted in alternate rows with carrots) are massive, & the carrots - autumn king - pathetically small; most barely an inch long, the biggest, few of them, 3 inches. They were planted at the same time, & treated e...
