Looks like a major job or an uneasy co-exsistance :( I'll get the kids to play football on it for a few days - that usually kills anything else!! then try and spray it.

Mares Tail

Hi all, can anyone direct me to a thread in the forum that deals specifically with the removal of mares tail? List of gardens to visit

Hi I am really enjoying reading the 'Head Gardeners' articles in the magazine and the occasional articles about vegetable gardens on the great estates. Can anyone point me in the direction of a list anywhere of kitchen gardens that are open to the public? I'm particularly interested in anything in t...

HI all,
Thanks for the advice as it meant I knew what to look for and after finding the 4th lettuce in the row under attack I carefully dug it up and there it was! horrid little brown grub curled up like a catapillar in the roots - revenge extracted  Thanks again :D

I must be having a bit of beginers luck with these - my Mum brought me a tray of 6 sorry looking assorted veg plants from Wilcos in May I think, No lables and all wilted - Mum paid 50p for them. I potted them up and put them next to sheltered wall in the garden. One night they completley colapsed wi...

sneeky underground pest?

Hi all, I planted a few lettuce seedlings the other day - 2 days later and half of them appear to have been chopped off where the stem meets the ground I thought slugs - then realised some of the seedling leaves seem to have been tugged down into the soil and eaten from below - any one got any ideas...

lots of Mustard & Cress seed

Hi - Can anyone tell me where I can get larger quantities of mustard & cress seed? The small shop bought packets are quite expensive for a small amount. Its a project for a lot of little people - grow in egg shells and such like. We have a lot of little people for the summer hols and I wondered ...

Hi JB - sometimes its the 'why' that makes sense of the 'how' .. Cuttings need an open textured compost because they need oxygen to the roots at all times JB. this 'why' was the bit that make the penny drop - so I mixed my left over compost more or less 50/50 with the perlite and now have 24 rosemar...

recipe for cutting compost

Hiya I'm going to have a go at taking some cuttings from my herb bed. I cant afford to buy the good cutting compost but I found in my 'inherited' allotment shed some perlite and some chunky vermiculite. I have some pretty good 'worm poo' from my wormery and a bit of left over general purpose compost...

Well, there you go! Good job I asked. It seems it is an 'elegant' solution for Eden as most of the willow fedging is in the bottom of the site which no doubt has drainage problems when it rains but on my garden, less moisture is not what I want. I will indeed look for another solution me thinks. Tha...

willow fedge Eden style

Hi I went on holiday to cornwall and a visit to the Eden Project blew me away! One of the many ideas I came away with was that a rather drafty spot on my allotment garden might be a suitable place for a low willow fedge - just the very basic kind of a bent over hoop of willow. I mentioned this to a ...

geraniums as a companion for veg?

Hi All,
I have a load of geraniums leftover (more plug plants than I can cope with!) Is anyone aware of benefits or problems with planing them in amoungst veg? I was thinking of edgeing the leek bed with them - they are fairly standard bedding geraniums.
Ta :D
