Re: weed suppressing membrane

>>>I removed it 2 weeks ago the ground was covered in weeds >>> weeds will still grow under a weed suppressing membrane - but they should be weaker because they won't be getting any light. In fact it is normal to cover the fabric with a mulch so that so little light gets in that the weeds are too fe...

Piglet - you might want to have a look round this site

http://www.fredshed.co.uk/about.htm

Fred is a paraplegic and reviews tools for abled and disables gardeners.

you should also take a look at

http://www.carryongardening.org.uk

which has suggestions for tools for anyone with a weak grip

Re: Waterlogged Ground

Just a thought...
<<<<What is worrying me is if we have more rain over the coming months what will this do to the ground and what will it take out of the ground.>>>>
would the use of a green manure help? I grew phacelia last year. It grows pretty quickly and as a bonus is great for th...

Re: Waterlogged Ground

worms can live underwater for quite a while. They'll probably move out of the waterlogged area to other allotments.

Re: Gardening lesson of the day .....

some of my sweetcorn look like that too. The outer leaves looked like they had been put through a shredder and the corn nibbled away.

I assumed it was mice - but squirrels could be the culprit too.

at least we had managed to eat most of them before the critters struck.

Thanks for that Tony. Looks like 10 crowns will definitely be enough for myself - the other half and probably the neighbours too. ;-)

asparagus

I realise this may be a bit of a - "how long is a piece of string question" - but here goes.... I want to grow asparagus - but how many crowns will I need? Most sellers offer 10 or 12 crowns. But what sort of yield should I expect from that many plants - once they have had time to mature (...

Richard I wear muck boots - which are a sawn off welly...but with a soft neoprene top. I love them - nice and easy to get on and off. Plus your paws don't get sweaty. You can see them here... http://www.garden4less.co.uk/muck-boots-ribble-boot.asp looks like they also do a shoe too - which might be ...

Re: Getting SO close, I can almost 'smell' it

There are other ways of getting rid of it even though it may be abhorrent to you. Hi JohnBoy I did a lot of research on bindweed and there seemed to be three recurring ways gardeners and allotment holders managed to weaken and kill it... 1. Glyphosate 2. cover it for at least a year 3. every time i...

Re: Getting SO close, I can almost 'smell' it

The previous owner of my allotment only grew potatoes and rotavated it every year.

Which is why I am spending all my time battling with bindweed. The damn stuff is everywhere.

Try and convince your other half that old fashioned digging is best.
