Square Foot Gardening Book

I tried square foot gardening a couple of seasons ago using a book by Mel Bartholomew as a guide. It was quite successful and I am keen to try it again but the book is written for the american climate. I was wondering whether anyone knew of a book for square foot gardening by a British author? Many ...

Cauliflowers

Hello all,
my cauliflowers this year were quite the disaster. Though the curds formed they were very thin and spread out looking more like a splat than a ball. Anyone know what I did wrong?

Hedges and lawn

Hi, a general question about my garden, so I hope I have put this question in the right place. I had an operation some time ago which laid me up for a couple of months. Now that I am back on my feet again and surveying my garden that has really run away with itself. Is it a big no no to cut lawns an...

White gravel

Hello All, not sure if I have put this enquiry in the right section but anyway: Around my raised beds, last year, I put down some white gravel. Although this made the whole area look very nice last year, this year the gravel has inevitably become covered in a fine green algae/ mould/ fungus. I don't...

Problems with broad beans

Hello, I planted out some broad bean plants about ten days ago. they were about 10 to 15 cm high and looked fine in the pots but after a week some of them looked rather shrivelled. Now after ten days a few have disappeared altogether! They seem to have shrivelled into nothing whears others appear to...

Pumpkins in the East Midlands

Hello, I was wondering if anyone has had any success growing pumpkins outside in the East Midlands? Am I being too optimistic in thinking they can grow in the not so clement weather we have here or do they only thrive in the greenhouse? Many thanks in advance. 8) [/b]

Thanks for your replies, I think I am quite lucky in not having a great slug problem which I put down to using raised beds made from wicker, which seem to deter all but the bravest of slug.

Last season's potatoes

Hello All, I was digging up my raised beds in preparation for the coming season and dug up some potatoes that I had forgotten about from last August. The plants had obviously died down a long time time ago, and while one or more tubers had rotted the vast majority looked perfectly fine. Cutting one ...

Dwarf French Beans

I was wanting to plant Purple Teepee dwarf French Beans this year . I have planted these before outside with great success on my allotment. However I don't have an allotment now and am pushed for space. I was wondering if anyone has had any success growing any dwarf varieties in pots, and if so if t...
