Re: Forum (in)activity
Judging by the amount of response and debate (or can of worms) my original posting has generated, might there not be some mileage in an article of some sort in KG, based on this debate, to see whether a similar amount of reaction might be provoked from readers who are either not members of the forum...

Re: What started you off on your vegetable growing career?
I learnt from my grandad - who was a gardener at the local "big house". First thing he showed me was how to plant potatoes - and I was quite young - the spade was taller than I was. I am still using my Grandfather's spade. About 10 years ago I had to fit a new handle, as the original brok...

Re: What started you off on your vegetable growing career?
I suppose the seed was sown in me when I was a nipper, early post-war, when I used to go with Dad & Grandad to their allotment to (supposedly) help - more realistically to get me out of Mother’s hair for an hour or two. I don’t remember doing anything very constructive there, beyond pulling (and...

I have to hold my hand up and admit to being an 'ad hoc' purchaser only. If that now qualifies (or dooms) me to be evicted from this forum, then so be it.

...I'm not a user of social media myself but it seems to me this is the way the world is going and it's a great shame not to capitalise on it and encourage both new and regular magazine readers to engage more proactively to share their own views and experiences. Is that an idea Primrose? Is it poss...

Re: Savoy cabbages
Thanks Pa.
From the picture on the seed packet it certainly looks very similar to Mila, and from the recommended spacing is likely to be a similar size. I shall certainly bear this one in mind.

Savoy cabbages
For the past 15 years I have grown Savoy cabbage Mila, (Marshalls seeds), following a recommendation from a contributor to (I believe) KG magazine. It has been the best performing Savoy I have known; heads are consistently large, firm, a lovely flavour and texture, stand well on the plot and keep we...

Re: Gardeners ' World
I was hoping that they would introduce a good range of experts and possibly be easing Monty Don towards his retirement. I do like looking at other gardens too whether large or small. I must read posts properly and not skip through quickly. I initially thought you had written '...EATING Monty Don......

Re: Plot holder worried by weedkiller
My understanding of glyphosate based weedkillers is that they do not leave any residue in the soil, and as such I should have thought that any vegetables grown subsequently in that ground could be regarded as organic. Having said that, presumably the weeds which have been killed and then decayed in ...

There still seem to be plenty of Cabbage Whites about, but very few 'pretty' butterflies.

Re: Any gooseberry chutney recipies?
The excellent recipe I have used for the last couple of years is based on one from ‘Jams, Preserves and Chutneys’ by Marguerite Patten. The original recipe uses white malt vinegar and mixed pickling spices, but I use the ready spiced white pickling vinegar successfully. 450 g onions, finely chopped ...
