Allotment projects

We had our allotment association AGM last night and we have a new committee elected for the next year. After a few turbulent years all of our plots are let, security has been improved and things are generally going along well. We have been thinking about projects for the next year and for some fundr...

Not already......

It really feels like Autumn here today. Soft drizzle and very cool but most telling of all is that Autumn sort of smell in the air. The Scottish schools went back this week so despite it being August I can't help feeling that the summer is coming to an end for us. Not complaining though as we have h...

Re: Harvest bits and bobs

Same here in the far North. It has been the best growing year we have had for ages. I have already cleared the broad beans, onions and early potatoes and resown with spinach and green manure. The freezer is jam packed with berries, peas and runner beans. Was wondering what to do with all the courget...

Re: Allotment Wars

I watched this today as I am at home nursing a cold. I thought it was very sad and painted a pretty poor picture of allotment life. There are some difficult people on all sites but parading problems in front of the camera is all a bit exhibitionist. Having said that, a proposal to have a veg competi...

Re: Carbon Monoxide poisoning.

Bought my granny a smoke alarm a few years ago and she insisted in taking the batteries out because it kept going off... She has twice had the fire brigade out in the last few years. She is now in sheltered housing which means that she can't disable the smoke alarm anymore but her latest idea is to ...

Re: Vandalism

Thanks for all of the replies folks. We had a meeting with the police last week and interestingly the local bobby advised that we report every single incident separately rather than together. Lots of plot holders leave the sheds open now.... I love the idea of lactulose and whisky. They made off wit...

Vandalism

Haven't been on the forum for a while - but Alan has certainly prodded some of us into posting so here is my contribution: Having left my plot of 10 years to move to a more secure site , the new site has now been vandalised on a nightly basis for the last month. The 6 ft high fence was painted with ...

Re: Yet another - new and improved black currant

Just to tag on to the end of this thread - has anyone tried a pink (rose?) currant. I am sure I saw something like that advertised in a catalogue last year. Sort of a cross between a white currant and a red currant.

Re: help - wasps nest

Monika, I'm afraid leaving them isn't an option as I need to clear that bit of ground to put my new shed (coming in 2 weeks time) on. I deliberately broke the nest as I was hoping that they would move elsewhere if the nest was disturbed. I don't really like killing things but it is looking like that...

Re: help - wasps nest

Thanks for all the replies. i am going up tonight to see if there is still activity there. I think that I broke open the nest on Sunday and we had a lot of heavy rain after that so I am hoping that they have decided to move on. My new allotment is on a private site so the Council won't come out (don...

help - wasps nest

Had a big clear up on my plot yesteday and inadvertently found a wasps nest in an old compost heap. It was pouring with rain today so I had the bright idea of forking it open and running like mad. Which I did and it was OK until about an hour later one or more of the blighters found me at the bottom...

Re: Garlic Query

A-a, yes it was winter planted so I guess that may be the reason. My usual practice of adding on 2-4 weeks because we are so far North seems to have backfired this time.
NB - pips will be taken off and sown in pots in greenhouse!

Thanks for your replies.

Garlic Query

Just been up to the plot and some of the garlic is dying back. I lifted 3 or 4 plants and noticed that there is secondary growth of mini cloves sometimes just above the bulb and on other plants a few inches up the stem. What has happened?

Re: Cucumbers not developing

Hi Ian, Unfortunately I don't know the answer to your query. I have had exactly the same problem. Two of my three plants collapsed at the base - may be slug damage? and the third has plenty of tiny cucumbers but they are not developing. Will be interetsed to see if anyone has any ideas as to why the...

Hi Pongeroon,
One of my colleagues uses a light box at work during the winter months and finds it quite effective.
