Re: Greenhouse books

I have found 'Vegetable and Herb Expert' by D G Hessayon to be invaluable over the years. I know he also has a 'Greenhouse expert' book available but have not used it.

Re: Possible pest?

Sounds a little bit like ladybird eggs, though they are normally found on the underside of leaves in little clusters.
There is a picture of them here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coccinellidae

Re: RED SPIDER MITE IN THE GREENHOUSE.

I have used the predatory mite 'Phytoseiulis persimilis' (I think ) to great effect. They are best used as a preventative though and it is recommended to do a release about once a month and as such can get very expensive. To use as a curative you really do need to spot the problem very early on, at ...

I wanted to have a go a couple of years ago, but none of them germinated and they rotted in the compost. I followed the instructions to the letter and have never failed to germinate anything before (though I have failed to keep the odd thing going after germination). Hopefully someone else can be mo...

Apologies, but I am not the bearer of good news! We had/have a similar problem and have been unable to eradicate them for years. We resort to manual control now and the best we hope for is to keep them at a manageable level. Most pesticides are only effective for a short period when the larvae are m...

Sorry I am a little late on this one. It looks like it could be thrips damage (but could just as easily be scorch from the sun). If you look on the underside of the leaves the bare patches are likely to have tiny black dots (thrip poo) on them. Thrips tend to cause unsightly damage but don't cause a...

Sweet potatoes need plenty of space as they grow into quite a rampant vine. Really need to be in a greenhouse though if you want any chance of a crop. They only really set tubers quite late in the season so I think an early crop is unlikely. If container growing make it as large as you can allow.

The other Richard is right about prevention and pruning. Mono potassium phosphate is used as a PK fertiliser, but also has an effect against mildew when sprayed at low doses, and must be better than a toxic fungicide.

Hi Monika
It is certainly possible, but would be highly labour intensive so only bother if you have plenty of spare time on your hands.

I tried to grow Soya beans - the Edamame variety for eating the beans rather than for the soya - and they failed to even germinate. Not sure what the problem was as I have never had germination problems before, but am not willing to try again as they were expensive.
