Thanks Maz, Lizzie, Wellie and Allan for the extra comments. Personally my first priority is to provide our small household with all the veg (and some fruit ) we can possibly eat, so I will need to look at ways of storing things. Allan - I don't have a greenhouse or polytunnel - will those over wint...

Thanks all for the replies - lots of useful info there. Guest – thanks in particualar for the recommendations of winter salad crops. I will definitely look more into those. I take your point about potatoes, but they are a particular favourite of mine (OH would say obsession!) so they’ll have to stay...

Waitrose are selling what they called Echalion Shallots. They are long and large (4-5" long) so I guess they are also banana shallots then? I'm going to try growing them - certainly easier to peel one large shallot than several smaller ones Any tips on growing shallots anyone? Best time to plant, be...

Oh so many varieties, how hard it is to narrow it down. I've had to be tough with myself this year, so I'm only growing 12 varieties this time... Earlies: As well as growing in the ground I've grown earlies in pots, either in an unheated greehouse, or outside under fleece to protect from frost, to g...
