raspberries, few new canes
I had a reasonable crop from my summer fruiting raspberries this season but there are very few new canes for next year’s fruit. It’s probably down to the almost total lack of rain in this part of Essex for the past few months. What can I expect next season, will I get a small amount of fruit and hop...

adora spuds
I tried Adora & Accent from T&M as first earlies and I found Adora very dissapointing (and I paid for them!), same problem as others, pock marked, low yield, etc. The Accent however are superb in yield, quality and flavour. Regards Allan (Doddy)

elephant garlic
As the dreaded white rot was threatening my garlic crop yet again, I decided to uplift my standard and elephant garlic. The standard garlic was not as bad as I anticipated but a bit on the small side, the elephant garlic however was magnificent. What interested me was that there were several “bulble...

moving goosberry bushes
I need to move four goosberry bushes I inherited when I took on my allotment 4 years ago. I have no idea of their age but they are fruiting well. Would it be O.K. to move them (when dorment) or should I start again with new bushes? Regards to all. Allan(Doddy)

I agree Chantel, the service is very good as is the response to e mails. A word of warning however, I purchased their pack of assorted pumpkins, courgettes etc and they are literally that, assorted, no way of telling which is which apart from the obvious, pumpkin seeds are the biggest. Nobody said l...

Timber Raised Beds
I was lucky enough to obtain a vast amount of timber from a builder friend and I have made 19 raised beds on my allotment. As they have only been in situ for just over a year I can’t comment on their longevity or any unwelcome guests. I do however have some very welcome guests, frogs and lots of the...

Well I am!
At Johnboys' suggestion I have sown onion seeds in a heated propagator and as I always do, will shortly be sowing mangetout peas 4 in a cell followed by beetroot again 4 clusters in a cell. Just getting into the new format, regards and a happy New Year to all, Allan (Doddy)
