Radish seeds are nice & spicy, but a little goes a long way as the flavour is quite strong. Having tried lots of different seeds for sprouting, I have to admit I keep going back to alfalfa. They sprout so evenly and quickly, and I love the metallic iron taste!

Pigletwillie: bread recipe

Got your request for my bread recipe. Have to rack my brains now, as I don't actually have it written out and I'll need to "visualise" the process I go through in order to write it down... Sift 1 pound of strong bread flour into a bowl with about a teaspoon of salt. Then tip in one sachet ...

Attn: Johnboy

Johnboy, sorry I couldn't find an email address to write to your privately. I received your message and now all becomes clear! Been there and done that before, on another forum where the same thing happened. Reminds me of an old Randy Crawford lyric: same old story, same old song, goes all right til...

To Grock in the Frock (jazz)

OK, Grock in the Frock, expose your real identity or I will never take a word you say seriously! The jazz site is on the BBC Jazz website: m Having moved in weird and wonderful jazz circles for years (not concentric circles, although sometimes I can disappear up my own flugelhorn) I was amazed and g...

That's an interesting viewpoint. I personally believe that an insult is an insult if it's meant that way, rather than if it's merely perceived that way by someone who chooses to get uppity about it. A friend of mine in the USA lost his job a while ago because he complained about "niggardly" allocati...

Well said, Colin. It's amazing how readily people spring at one another's throats on this forum sometimes. I thought gardeners were supposed to be calm, patient, friendly types! I also subscribe to a jazz forum and, by contrast, all those way-out hipsters are the very model of politeness, reasoned d...

I bought mine yesterday and the planting instructions say "plant in spring". I usually plant them in February). Since we now have "climate chaos", as Monty Don calls it, I guess the only way is to go by what your local weather has been/is expected to be.

Personally I wouldn't risk eating anything if I don't know exactly what it is! The root you found sounds similar to one I dug up in a new vegetable patch I was making a few years ago. The plant itself was some kind of climber which shot about 40 feet up into an old plum tree. The leaves were a very ...

Yes, you're right of course. Working from home, with a 4-bedroom house and large garden to look after, plus a husband who's just had a double stroke, of course I have too much time on my hands and really ought to invest in a bread maker.

Hmm, maybe I'm gorwing impatient in my old age but I found Tucker's website and catalogue a pain in the nether regions to navigate. Since I only sprout about a teaspoonful of seed every week, I think I'll have to pass on this one!

Yes, using wholemeal flour does produce a denser loaf which many people don't care for. Also, unless you use organic flour, there is probably likely to be less pesticide residue in white flour (because the husk is discarded). Depends how purist you want to be and what you want from your loaf. As to ...

I've been a happy vegetarian for 20+ years and the most useful pieces of advice I can give you is: don't try to do it cold turkey. Most of the "failed" vegetarians I know gave up just because they stopped eating flesh but didn't replace it with anything else. Cows can live on grass alone, but humans...

I have a large area of grass to cut, arranged on 3 levels (2 at the back of the house, 1 at the front). To make it even more interesting, the biggest area has a brook at the bottom which floods twice a year. Thus the lawn (if you can call it that) is uneven and always very moist - oh, and it has 4 t...

When you say it's a plastic dustbin style, do you mean that it's a bucket-shaped container without an open bottom? If so, then you can put it on concrete without worrying too much about leakage. Also, you could obtain some worms to put into the compost once you've got it started, so standing on soil...

Can someone suggest a lightweight mower please?

My husband suffered a stroke 2 months ago and is not likely to recover well enough to use our heavyweight petrol mower when the time comes to start cutting the grass again. I will be taking over the job, but due to arthiritis I need a lightweight machine (don't you just love the ageing process?). Ca...
