Re: Figs

Hi Beryl. He's almost better. I think he's enjoyed being looked after, and of course he's been able to sit and watch me work on the allotment!!

Re: Figs

Hello Johnboy! Yes, I've been so busy, last year with my wedding, which seemed to completely take over my life, and this year I've had a poorly but recovering husband and so much allotment produce to deal with. I'm just starting to see some calm water ahead and hope to get back into the forum. I've ...

Re: Figs

According to my freezer book, figs freeze perfectly. Wrap each one well and bag up. When needed defrost at room temp and they're as good as fresh. I have frozen some of mine this year but have yet to defrost one to confirm this information. Hope this helps!

Re: Asparagus

OH, no, they just sit there in all weather. I do cover them up with compost in the Autumn and again in March. Mine are 5 year's old and I grew them from seed so I'm quite proud of the little fellas!

Re: How to treat last of the parsnips

Jamie Oliver has a lovely recipe for parsnip and ginger soup. I've used the last of my parsnips for soup and frozen it.

Re: Spuds, Carrots & Blueberries

Vinegar is used as a weedkiller by some people. If you spray it onto weeds on a sunny day it kills them (can't quite remember how - something to do with water evaporation from the leaves). Apparently vodka has the same effect. What a waste!

Re: Wood Ash

Anything that fruits loves it - tomatoes, peppers, that sort of thing, onions too. If you have any overwintering onions, garlic put some round them. It washes into the soil very quickly so for use round toms, etc save some in a bucket or bag somewhere dry.

Ah yes, someone else mentioned that book to me. I will have to have a look at it, and also try googling fruit leather. Thanks everyone.

Re: Lemon Tree - is it safe outside with a fleece cover?

Lemon trees are fairly tolerant of low temperatures, but they hate wet conditions. They also thrive if the roots are restricted. Is yours in a pot now? I would recommend potting it rather than planting it directly into the garden, that way if really cold weather arrives you can bring it indoors. The...

Hello again. I pushed mine in as far as the first horizontal bar; not a metre, more like 60cm.
